So, the story is going around, you probably have heard about it. Big abortion debate/vote in Texas yesterday, and on fears that some protesters might throw them into the assembly, tampons and pads where being confiscated before people could enter the viewing area.

Supposedly the Texas legislature heard from somewhere that they might be possibly used to disrupt the proceedings. So my question is, do you find this action justifiable?

If the rumor was out there that women were going to start pelting the legislature with their tampons and pads? I think they were justified. What's the big deal?

Re: Was This Acceptable?

I don't know if it's acceptable or not, but the symbolism of confiscating feminine hygiene products at a senate debate on abortion was an outright media coup for Pro-Choice: the image that conservative men just want to control women's bodies is driven home rather effectively. The fact that the senate didn't seem to really consider the impact this would have only further establishes a general cluelessness on their part.

"Absolutely not justifiable, But nothing that the GOP does in Texas surprises me.

It's going to take a while, but eventually Texas will be a Blue State.

Reasonable. The state has a vested interest in preventing a legislative hearing from turning into a circus like embarrassment.

Re: Was This Acceptable?

No they should have just closed the viewing area or prohibited women with those thingies from entering. The guy apparently has confiscated more snacks than tampons, so this is this a non-story to begin with. Looks like he has 4 female products, two boxes of snack food and a bottle of water in his box. Are progressive autocrats really so desperate that this is the best they can come up with for their persecution complex?

By the way, the Clif bars should have been confiscated anyway because they suck.

Acceptable, yes. But hilarious and ill-considered.

Based on a rumor? No, not acceptable.

What's next, taking away things because 'people might....'?

The Press is saying that the republicans ramming this legislation through will come back on them during the 2014 elections. They're calling it the boom-a-rang tampon law.

It was acceptable, and I'm glad they did it. As Cardinal said "the image that conservative men just want to control women's bodies is driven home rather effectively. The fact that the senate didn't seem to really consider the impact this would have only further establishes a general cluelessness on their part."

It was a PR win for the pro-choice side.

Bravo, Texas! Bravo!

Re: Was This Acceptable?

I think it's effing ridiculous. They are personal hygiene products that people need, it was completely inappropriate to confiscate them.

If someone decided to start throwing them then remove them from the area and charge them with I don't know assault with a soft object?

Why not simply say that anything thrown in the state house will be treated as a terrorist threat and you will be held in a GITMO-like facility, for up to 10 years until you are deemed ready for trial or safe enough to be released? ;)

Hmm.... held at GITMO or held in Texas? It's a toss-up.

Not really. No coup, not when jars of feces and urine were also confiscated.

Perhaps the women who collected feces and urine will grow up and have a little self-respect.

Then they can work on respect for others. In the meantime and irrespective of whatever the issue happens to be, you can't throw stuff at your elected reps while they're going about their work.

While it's only natural (and convenient) to judge an opposing side by two or three of their worst elements in order to distract from the main message, the story is about collecting tampons.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with that. Where's the story where you saw it?

Re: Was This Acceptable?

Those are individual tampons, not boxes, or bags, so, no, it was not acceptable, especially based only on a rumor.

I agree with the others here, that it was a win for pro-choice supporters. The symbolism was very appropriate to the bill under discussion.

And, btw, as to the feces and urine, I condemn those who brought it. That was an actual threat.

There are multiple threads on this. Here's the short version: The Texas Senate was prevented by disruptive influences on June 25th from finishing its term's business. The Senate made clear that it would enforce its rules of conduct, and state troopers were there to to see to it. Acting on a tip, the DPS searched every bag and confiscated jars of feces and urine as well as tampons. After several women complained and the Dem leader Kirk Watson objected, the DPS rescinded the order to confiscate tampons.

And, BTW, Senate Bill 5 passed last night.

I don't really take those stories seriously. These days every movement, liberal or conservative, is going to have one of two negative elements (or both): the super wackos who are so keyed into their ideology that they've lost all connection with how they appear to the outside world, and poes placed there in order to discredit the movement. As a result I'm more interested a)the message behind the movement and b)the overwhelming majority of characters involved in that movement.
