State of the Union discussion thread

Huh? Up until a few weeks ago, who has been in control of the house and senate?

So your take is when the dems were in the majority they could do anything they wanted? You can't be serious.

Only a moron politican would promote more gun laws right now. You can say what you want about Obama but he isn't a moron politician.

Thats odd since democrats were on NBC saying it seemed odd Obama did not mention it

They could have if they had stopped the in fighting since they had a super majority

I use to think the same thing - but then I started to really see how much our political issues affect everyone else - it's quite widespread. International debate and concern should be encouraged since we're such a global "leader"

I don't have a problem with that as I have European relatives. It's the part about getting all worked up I don't get.

Pretty good speech on Obama's part. Some things I liked, some things I didn't, lots of stuff I'm not holding my breath on based on the low history of SOTU things actually being made good on.

Paul Ryan's was good and it was the first time I've heard him speak at length. I think this guy in 6 years if Obama gets re-elected would be a GREAT candidate.

Bachman's wasn't horrible, but it annoyed me she gave one.

You bet he would... Ryan and Chris Christie are my two favorite conservative politicians.

I read the State of the Union, stupid strep, and some of it sounded good and some of it didn't. Overall I expect 5 percent of it to go through because I have learned that most of the speeches are just words.

I think this maybe a true turrning point. Perhaps my favorite part was how Obama made it a priority to lower the corporate tax if loopholes were closed. He seems to be reaching-out and now the ball is in the GOP court. Politically it was a brilliant speech.

I haven't been watching, both Ryan AND Bachmann gave a speech? What did they say? Why the need for two responses?

If the President is going to talk about illegal immigration, he should have the balls to use the correct terminology across the board. They are 'illegal immigrants', not 'undocumented workers'.

If you want to call them 'undocumented workers', you should then also refer to 'illegal immigration' as the 'influx of undocumented workers' or something along those lines.

Um, he did. He talked specifically about the problem of illegal immigration.

They spoke about fiscal responsibility. You wouldn't have liked it.

I recall Bachmann trying to correlate a giant spike in unemployment to Obama with some stupid chart. Someone should have poked her on the shoulder and let her know about the giant economic crash that happened.

I'm all for fiscal responsibility. Just because I'm a liberal doesn't mean I think we should spend beyond our means.

Actually, I think that's exactly what liberal means.

I sense you're trying to make a point. I'm not sure what it is though.

But by comparison, liberals make conservatives look like fiscal hawks.

I would like for any of you to show me one President or Congress from either side who has ever made cuts to entitlements.

The bottom line is i'm for fiscal responsibility. Really, who isn't? I'm pretty young right now and my generation is going to be the one saddled with trying to pay back the debt. As a liberal I support expansive government. But I don't support spending more money than you take in in revenue.
