North Korea says that Kim Jong Il has died.
What is that country going to do now? Who is in charge?
Good riddance I say, but it's going to be interesting next few weeks. I wonder how long he's been dead though, if they kept this under wraps, and he's been on ice for a while, or if this truly happened today.

Good point...Castro with cancer, now Chavez with cancer and Il...well...ill no more. Coincidence?Damn, I had Castro in my dictator death pool.
The North Korean news announcer stated Kim Jong Il died two days ago, although most other reports are saying the 18th. Im assuming this is Korean time which means today in 19Dec for those of you in the West, and I know its extremely early to tell but this may be a good sign. When Kim Il sung died, the father, the official media also waited roughly the same amount of time. I assume the wait is to give Party and Government elites time to deal with a few critical and immediate issues, during that first death of the leader in North Korea Kim Jong Il was already well prepared within the government to assume power there was no question and the transition was fairly smooth as far as anyone can tell. Since this death is so far, again extremely early to tell, is following the same pattern it may be a sign that the NK government has prepared for this and mechanisms were in place to ensure another smooth transition to avoid anything that would threaten the state or stability. This would also follow in line with a natural pastern of thinking NK elites would follow after Kin Jong Il's stroke in 2008, a natural response for them after that event would be to prepare and put those mechanisms in place while they still had time to do it.
Call me extremely cautiously optimistic of a smooth transition.
The South Koreans appear somewhat concerned, military on emergency standby, national security council meeting etc.
