Let's try this again. The Founders created the Constitution to protect the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT from controlling religion or establishing a national religion. The states could do their own thing, but the Federal Government was prohibited.
I'm still waiting on your critique of the show, Catz. It only takes about 40 minutes to watch.
I watched 5 minutes, and it was excruciating. Beck's first comment was that Obama's advisors are all socialists . JEsus Christ, Mellie. Do you actually consider that an unbiased presentation of facts? If so, I'm sorry.
You watched Beck....:rofl
Ahhhh okay. Don't watch the man who has the largest collection of original early American documents in the world discuss the faith of our Founders. This show is like a history class. I challenge anyone to watch it and tell me what is untrue.
Gosh, ya might even learn something you didn't know. Or you could remain clueless and afraid to challenge your thinking. *shrug*
Your bias is showing. People are discussing how they would rather receive their information on the founders via well researched, scholarly papers and books. You would prefer that they watch Glenn Beck. I don't see this thread going anywhere.
I am pretty sure that the values being touted as christian predate christianity, and that nearly all religions of today have the same set of values.

Lastly, (to move back some number of pages) I highly doubt, that Glenn Beck has the most impressive collection of documents surrounding the early decades of American history.
He doesn't. His guest does.

I watched about half of it and I'll say this. I don't think any of what was said on there was factually inaccurate, I think it was simply irrelevant. Our country is a democracy, and as such, the opinions of the people alive today in America are what matter, not those of people who have been dead for 200 years or more. What the founding fathers intended when they wrote the constitution is irrelevant. All that matters is what was written, and it's up to us to interpret it as we choose.
They used to be able to. It wouldn't be possible now because the Supreme Court would knock it down. I wouldn't be opposed to going back to that. If, for instance, my state wanted to establish a Catholic state, I'd move since I disagree with Catholics on almost everything.
It would never work now because the federal government has evolved into being the be-all-end-all instead of the other way around. The states are SUPPOSED to have more authority than the federal government.
No, the states could NOT set up a state religion. The first amendment would prohibit that, and the 10th wouldn't help them because of the existence of the 1st. Further, throughout history, starting with the nullification crisis, it has been established that the states can NOT create laws that over rule federal government laws. Though folks like you seem to believe that the US is a collection of individual fiefdoms that can create their own laws that over rule the federal government, we are not.
Having David Barton lecture on the religious views of the founding fathers is a lot like having a botanist offer commentary on evolution of mammals.

Catz its not surprising Beck would use Barton. Many fringe people use his shoddy research as supposed proof. He was popular for a while in the 90s but then disappeared about the time people researched some of his fake quotes. Hes had to make correction after correction to is videos and books.Wow. There's an awful lot online about author David Barton...

What? An author who appeared on the Glen Beck show MADE UP A FICTIONAL QUOTE BY JAMES MADISON and other founding fathers in order to bolster his case? I'm shocked and appalled.
But not surprised.
Here's a little light reading for you, Mellie.

Have you? Do you know what its about? Do you know the author of it was a socialist? He wrote another book that you fringe types like to misconstrue.Have you ever read Animal Farm? Just curious...
The US constitution. A belief in God does not denote christianity.Christian principles WERE used to create and govern. Good gravy! What Founders documents are you reading where they DON'T mention God or scriptures?
I watched a full episode the other night. I felt like i needed a shower after. I couldnt help but yell at my tv. It was when he had audience members on. One asked a question about what positive things he could point to. Instead he goes on and on about his childhood and never answers the question. I realize he does it for money and anyone who accepts what he says as truth when he doesnt believe it himself should rethink their lives. Beck personally believes in manmade global warming and uses green products in his own home.I forced myself to, but when he went into full on rant mode in the first five minutes, and with that terrible plaid shirt and paisley tie, I had to stop. The horror.
I had some faint hope that he was having a rational moment, but alas.
