Occam, I'm not affiliated with any political party.
My apologies... so your "philosophy" is libertarian but you don't support their party... got it. You're one of those neo-libertarians that popped up in 2009? Interesting. I've been observing libertarians for over a decade.
Tell me, who are the leading thinkers of the libertarian "philosophy"? I'm curious how much you actually know about the political moniker you cloak yourself in.
The Occupy Wall Street movement is off target and have not one damn clue what they would get if they were taken seriously which I don't because they are a bunch of unwashed thieves, and druggies with no pride in themselves and they should be protesting Obama and the ones who pasted the Community Reinvestment Act in 1977 and continued to allow it loan money for housing people could not afford and Obama for his failed policies that wasted billions on failed programs.
I say clear them out and jail everyone who violates the law. They are Un-American.
Occam, I understand that most of my political opinions lean libertarian according to their platform. The rest of your post is irrelevant. I don't follow people...I follow beliefs.
One of our younger kids is extremely independent and would not accept our help with her college expenses. She worked while attending college and got student loans. She graduated nearly three years ago and has still not been able to find a job in her field nor has she been able to find a job that pays a living wage. We are paying her student loans for now while she continues applying because there is no way she could pay them herself.
Before anyone says my baby girl is lazy, isn't really looking for a job, etc. -- this is a kid worked 30 hours a week and was an honor student in college. She is extremely motivated and driven. She has applied for many hundreds of jobs in her field. The jobs just are not out there. As for jobs outside of her field - when employers see her education and GPA, they figure she won't stay in a decent job with their firm. She is left filling low-wage, high-turnover positions to live.
My guess is a lot of the people defaulting on their student loans are in the same boat as our daughter and their parents are not in a financial situation to help them.
Democrats always puzzle over why so many Republicans clearly vote against their interests. Middle class Republicans routinely vote, for example, for measures that transfer enormous amounts of wealth from the middle class to the super wealthy. It never really makes sense to us. One theory is that Republicans all think they are about to be rich. Another theory is that Republicans fetishize the rich as see is as some kind of sacrifice they are making to their idols or something. But the theory I tend to believe is that they actually think they ARE the rich. They think that like owning a house and two cars means they're amongst "the rich" that people want to tax more. LOL.
My parents couldn't pay anything. I went to college and got two degrees. I have have a well-paying job that I love.
dear sir,
if your daughter has a 4.0 she can get many scholarships, all of which should be sufficient to send her to school. or, she can join the military; the GI Bill is a fantastic deal for young hard-chargers.
In addition, if you were depending upon using your house as a bank account to pay for college, then I love ya brother, but you made an economically bone-headed decision. I would suggest from now on you not bank chunks of your childrens' future on your desire to live in a house that you can't afford.

I don't see anything that would lead to the conclusion this guy bought more house than he could afford.
Maybe he's owned it for years and now its worth so much less that he's upside down. Maybe that 70k was invested somewhere that it was lost in the crash.
I agree about his daughters options with a 4.0 GPA.
I just take issue with your assumption that everybody who's having a hard time must be a ****up.
then take heart - because that's not my assumption. there are truly heart wrenching stories in this group. but if this guy's house went down 70K, and that was what destroyed his ability to send his daughter to college, then he had a very poor allocation of resources.
But there aren't many, many ideologies LEADING it. And I know about the "people's microphone". It's annoying and stupid.
