Then there was a time before that where people were openly hostile against them, and those who served. They grew up and found a home of the left. I've even seen it a little bit now, when I was at my last duty station in California, so it's not like there are clean hands on any side for this. I have to admit that at least it's generally not something that happens with the majority of either side, so that's good.

Nah, you missed the obvious driver of the story. If everything else was exactly the same except the boys didn’t have MAGA hats on it likely wouldn’t have even made the local news much less major networks.
