Unlike you, the expert on Italian public opinion who once went on holiday to lago di Como 12 years ago, I don't have to pretend to have Italian friends. Half my family is Italian and their take and the take of my Italian friends on this issue is many and varied, as you'd expect it to be. In the main, people realise that there's a huge problem which stretches beyond Italy's borders, you only need to see the numbers arriving to see that. However the intelligent, level headed people realise that the real answer lies in searching for political, economic and social solutions in their countries of origin. Bush's war on terror didn't achieve that, it made matters worse. "Send the rif-raf" home is neither the intelligent nor the compassionate answer. Neither is erroneously suggesting that all muslim men are rapists.
People arriving on our shores need to be treated like human beings, processed and assessed, and genuine asylum seekers considered for permanent re-setttlement. Economic migrants need to be considered on their merits according to immigration law. Some chancers need to be sent back, but that's not the people fleeing everything in terror, nor those seeking a better life because our world economic and political systems make their lives utter ****. Everybody deserves to be treated decently. Every one of those people ruining the view for plastic Donatella is a human being.
I'm an immigrant to France myself, as I was to the UK as a child. You may consiedr me rif-raf, but I can assure you, none of my family members are rapists, and neither is my muslim boyfriend nor his family members. You are insulting to the nth degree.
Taxes? Somebody once said he loved paying taxes because that's what bought him a civilised society. Now if you're not familiar with the quote loook it up - the person who said that was neither European nor Arab nor muslim!
