House backs increasing coronavirus stimulus checks to $2,000

House passes the Trump quested $2000 stimulus, and quite a number of repubs joined in.

Now, let's see what they do in the Senate.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill Monday evening to increase direct coronavirus relief payments to some people to $2,000, though the measure faces an uphill battle in the Republican-run Senate, despite support from President Donald Trump.
It was dumb of Trump to sign the package, now there’s no leverage to force a 2000 dollar check.

I did, and I was right, it’s a right wing shithole website.

How did a poll which favored both sides of the political spectrum cause you so much irrational anger?

Uh, never mind...
Just The News media bias rating is Center. AllSides Gives Just the News a Center rating. In July 2020, an AllSides editor conducted an independent review of NAME HERE and gave it an initial rating of Center. Note that a Center bias does not necessarily mean a source is unbiased, neutral, or always reasonable.

I’m sorry your clickhole site didn‘t provide you the fig leaf you needed to pretend you were engaging in this conversation. :(

Man, Trump just humiliated the House Republicans on this- especially those Freedom Caucus, "people need to stop suckling at the gubmint teat and pick themselves up by the bootstraps" folks. They fought the dems tooth and nail to bring down the personal payments from what the Dems had originally proposed. Now they snap to attention as Trump kicked them like a dog and yanked their leash. No longer can they claim to be all about fiscal responsibility or personal responsibility. They have been revealed as the sad barking yelping dogs of Trump that they are.

As far as the GOP senate, now it's their turn to be humiliated. This was their ultimate nightmare, and Trump just made it a reality. They too will be outed for the spineless and principle-less dogs that they are:

"On Sunday night, as part of his face-saving efforts following his utter capitulation to Congress in signing the Covid-19 stimulus relief legislation, President Donald Trump insisted that "the Senate will start the process for a vote that increases checks to $2,000, repeals Section 230, and starts an investigation into voter fraud."

The last two claims there from Trump are utter bunk; there appears to be little will among Senate Republicans to rethink the way social media companies regulate content or to spend months digging for voter fraud claims that are, well, nonexistent.
It's Trump's first point -- that the Senate "will start the process for a vote that increases [stimulus] checks to $2,000" -- that is by far the most realistic and politically problematic suggestion for Republicans.

Why? Because it puts them in a very small box: Either vote to massively increase the national debt -- by giving $1,400 more to every qualifying individual in the country -- or vote against what is much-needed money for people who have been devastated by the economic effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic."

So, either violate a bedrock principle of conservatism (the government is spending us into unmanageable debt!) or be attacked as heartless by Democrats. It's a lose-lose. Bigly. Especially if you are Sens. Kelly Loeffler or David Perdue, both locked in tight runoff races on January 5. Both incumbent Republicans need base conservatives with them to win, so a vote for more government spending isn't a good one.

But they also can't actively agitate the rest of the state -- including swing voters in the suburbs who want the government to help those struggling as much as they can. It's a nearly impossible line to walk, politically speaking."

We won't qualify but hell yeah, I wouldn't give it back if we were qualified and should find its way into our mailbox. ;)
I could help my family with that money.
Yeah, I grew-up with some pretty old-school, old-world, European Catholics. They didn't believe in taking anything from anybody! They had a lot of pride.

As a kid, I remember my family members saying they would never take any welfare or public assistance - no matter how broke they ever may get. Most of the neighborhood, was pretty much like that. If any ever had to use public assistance, they surely didn't tell anyone. It was a matter of pride, and avoiding the shame of admitting you couldn't support your family.

It's something I can still respect 'till today, even as times have changed. As a society, I believe we've lost some of our pride & respect - time marched on.

Sometimes I almost think we grew up in the same neighborhood.
Alas, grew up in the suburbs and was raised by a typical PROUD old-school, old-world first generation Greek Orthodox Catholic father and a Roman Catholic mother. Eventually, she won the battle and we were raised RC.

I hear the Republican controlled Senate may vote against the bill.

WTF would they do this?????? Do they want America to hate them???

Here is one of the two prick Democrats who voted against it and why. Fortunately, this asshat crony lost this last election primary to a Bernie-dem.

The article said it narrowly passed, does that mean it was a party line vote?
It needed a 2/3rds majority vote to pass, so passing wasn't particularly "narrow", and it was quite bipartisan.

$2,000 is not enough. Thanks for the scraps.

It would only need 2/3 majority if Trump vetos it... Since he is the own who suggested it, a simple majority in the house and senate will make it law... (assuming Trump sticks to his position and signs it)

Not true. Not in the least true. This is why understanding how government works is important...

Yeah, I'm curious how much Trump will actually do beyond his initial throwing a cherry bomb in the toilet. The GOP could counter and push for higher amount checks to people who are unemployed as a more reasonable solution. One can argue whether it makes sense to send everyone $2,000 since that includes people who are employed and would likely just put that money in their savings.

Why would a bill that president says he will sign need 2/3 majority approval?

Edit: They needed 2/3 majority to comply with the house rules for expedited procedure in the house. A simple majority is all that is needed in the senate.

Changing the portion of a bill that has already been signed is different than passing a new bill, and doing so under suspension of House rules is also different than passing a new bill.

And there is no 2/3 requirement in the senate... just a simple majority vote is all that is needed...

Cool. Should be easy then.

I'm simply saying there will be NO additional stimulus passed by the senate this round...

Because the GOP doesn't want to give economic relief to the people.

Btw, a survey of registered voters disagree.

Wow... so do tell, is it the registered voter that will decide to increase the direct payment from $600 to $2000?

The $2,000 stimulus checks will never be passed tomorrow. Most of the senate held Republicans had already opposed even a $1,200 check because the Democrats refused to remove the pork.

Liar.

Mitch wanted the goodies for his corporate buddies.

Looks like the $2,000 check bill is heading for a vote in the Senate. The question is, what poison pill will Mitch attach to it to kill it then blame the Dems? Oh... the section 230 bullshit and voter suppression pork are his poison pills.

What a scum bag. He found a way to bring it to a vote and insure it would not pass.

Every republican that backs this crap should burn in hell.

Perdue and Loeffler trying to play both sides of the fence on this one. If they really wanted this $2000 checks bill to happen they could force it. But they are not. They say they want it just to appeal to the trump base while sitting back on their laurels and doing nothing about it when they could be.
