Are you sure it doesn't stop people from hiring you?

Name one company that has refused to hire an individual on account of their sexuality? For that matter name one respectable company that requires it's employees to be straight? Having worked in a business environment for the last oh 4 years(since I was 17 - I'll be 21 this April) I can honestly tell you there is not one single company in the entire U.S. that has gotten away with refusing to hire somebody because of their sexuality.

There's no law that says it can't. How many can serve in the military, openly? How many can marry the person they love? How well are they accepted on the police force? The fire department?

What are you talking about? There are hundreds of people in the military/police for/fire departments that are gay and they serve. Most of their comrades know they're gay. I'm not aware of any employer in the U.S. that asks you if you're gay when you apply for a job.

A poor fellow I read about in the news a few years ago was beat to death because he was holding his wife's purse and some people thougth he was gay.

I'd really like a link for this.

All you are saying is that we were worse over color. I'm saying a who got treated worse arguement means nothing. The problem is still the same.

You obviously dont understand the difference between two situations being compared and two situations being the same so I'll just wait until you find out the definitions of each one.

Well, I could give anadotal stories, but I believe if you look on a state by state bais, homosexuals, who make up 10% of the population, make up 3-9% of lawsuits concerning discrmination in the work place, which includes hiring and promotions. And I would modify your last sentence to say openly.

Again, the key word would be openly. The US wouldn't even use gay arabic translators during a time of war, openly. The don't ask don't tell policy is an outgrowth of that silliness. And you might want to survey police forces and firedepartments around the country and see how privately accepting they are.

BTW, not asking also makes it harder to prove why you didn't get the job when you were quite qualified.

I'll look for one. It's a local story, so I'll ask around if I can't find it.

No need to be insulting. No two situations are completely the same. But if there is a bases for comparison, and there is, then they are close enough to be a legitimate match and can be put together, or in the language of this thread, piggybacked.

Like I said there is not one company in the entire U.S.A. that can get away with sexual discrimination in this day and age. 50-60 years ago? You could get away with lynchings nowadays you have a lawyer ready to sue a company because one it's employees broke a nail.

But why would you even tell your employee you're gay anyways? Does that make you better at your job? Unless you're applying to work a brother I highly doubt it.

Do that.

No they can't. They can be compared but they are by no means "matching".

Example :

Comparing.

A few decades ago whites weren't allowed to marry blacks. Today gay people are unable to marry who they want.

Being the same.

Gays in this country are treated in the same way blacks were during segregation.

------------------------------------------

In the first one I was comparing the situation. In the other one I was claiming they were the same.

Is it OK for Homosexuls to Piggy-Back the Civil Rights Movement in an effort to gain more rights?

I highly disapprove of the way you phrase this question. It's like you're implying that homosexuals don't deserve the same rights as straight people.

I am torn between thinking that it is OK and that it is NOT.

I have yet to hear from any African-Americans that feel that it is Acceptable.

That's because its Utah. Here in New York its quite different. Depends who you talk to. bourgeois pop culture instills homophobia as something that is perfectly normal, on TV, in music, etc.. (the word "fag" or when someone says thats "gay") just like rascism was pre-civil rights movement.

Your thoughts?

It is a insult to compare sexual attraction/behavior to race. The two are not comparable nor are they the same and that is probably why a lot of Americans of African decent get insulted by the comparison.

I don't see it that way at all...
I think that you are a defensive P.C. hound of a person that sees attack in simple questions...

If you are unclear of his intentions...ask instead of assuming. This has been a point of contention that I have had with you from the get go...you assume up the yin-yang.

That's because its Utah.

I don't think that he actually lives in Utah... ;)

I see our culture instilling ideas that homosexuality is perfectly acceptable and non-threatening. I think that race and sexuality have certain similarities and that the homosexual movement has taken on the role of the persecuted. I think that they are using the simpathy of mainstream oppression of blacks as a rallying cry in order to gain "freedoms" that are not comparable to the oppressed black from days gone by and that it is insulting to those that struggled. That is just me and you have said nothing that would even come close to dissuading my understanding of the issue.

No not really, both homosexuals and blacks are oppressed groups fighting for equal rights.

It is not the same because you have a choice in who and what you want to Fu<k or get fu<ked by,Americans of African decent do not have a choice in having darker skin.

Really? Does one have a choice as who one wants to **** or be ****ed by? If so, how can one change these desires?

umm no. Its something you're born with. Have you ever questioned weither or not you like woman? Neither have I. It's not a choice or a lifestyle. If it were, who would WANT to be gay in this homophobic society where gay people are slandered at subhumans at every corner of popular culture.

You as a individual make a choice in whom you want to have sex with.No one forces you to engage in sexual activity with someone you do not want to.So it is not the same as race.

Last time I checked there was this thing called free will, from what I heard we all have it.Does someone point a gun to your head telling you you have to have sex with someone you do not want to have sex with?

no you don't you're born with it. You're naturally attracted to woman right? Have you ever wanted to **** a guy? No. Why? Because you're naturally attracted to woman not men. Its the same for gay people. This is basic stuff. Why would gay people be any different. If you didn't chose why would they? Answer the question.

I can't believe you are saying this guy has a choice in his sexual preferences. Think about yourself. Though Gay people spout stats claiming half the world is gay I rather doubt it and I'm betting you are straight. So try to visually imagine what goes on between two gay people. Could you *ever* particpate in something like that? Is it a matter of choice for you? I may be a bit of a prude but I know I'd certainly throw up repeatedly, based on me throwing up with some types of straight sex, and it's not really a matter of choice. Why don't you just let them be themselves with themselves, treat them with respect, and mind your own business?

well I'm straight but I have gay friends, and this may sound wrong to you and jamesrage, but they seem pretty human to me... not the animals and snakes that james seem to portray them as. The question is, why no equal rights?

I think they should have equal rights in all things myself. And it's really a shame that they don't. It once agains proves how primitive our society is.

this is exactly what I was talking about.

What insight do you give in saying society is primitive, other than observing that you are superior to it in your lack of primitivity?

You think they should have equal rights in all things? How about on things where there are already unequal rights throughout society at large, such as access to classified documents? Then who should they be equal to?

Is lack of equality the problem? For if the problem is merely lack of equality, then is there any problem with sculpting the infrastructure of institutions in a way that equal access is inherently discriminatory (example, gays have equal rights to marry, but as marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman, equal rights isn't worth a whole hell of a lot to men who aren't attracted to women and women who aren't attracted to men)?

Talking about the need for equality is just intellectual masturbation, it feels good, but it's completely devoid of meaning.

Lay off the herbs and get it together so others can relate. Like you know what I mean?!

no you don't you're born with it.
So your saying that certain people are born with a gun pointed to their head with someone yelling at them to receive it up the *** like a bitch, instead of the ability to choose whom they want to have sex with?

Willfully engaging in sex with a chosen partner is not the same a race. You can control whether or not you have sex and with who you have sex with, you can not control the color of your skin.

wtf? Is this serious? Did you choose? Did you have to look at a magazine and weigh your options? what the hell are you even talking about.

But you can't control which sex you want to have sex with and thus shouldn't be denied equal human rights.

Grow a pair of balls already you sissy...

You "thank" some moron for wondering about a completely obvious and relevant question...this is par for the course with you.

Unless you are able to act mature and "Intelligent" (which I know is a stretch) then we are done kiddo!
