FLASHBACK: 30 years ago, Nancy Pelosi demanded Congress confront Chinese tariffs on American goods

30 years ago........................................

I was smoking weed. Anyone want to discuss what I was doing or saying or suggesting 30 years ago??

The leftist politicians are all just raging piece of shit hypocrites. They are content with watching the country suffer if it means they can score political points...and they know the mindless rat party voters won't question any of it.
😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆
Repukes are panicking over that the malignant narcissist scumbag piece of shit liar grifter rapist seditionist felon serial adulterer and tax cheat has done. And with good reason. YEA TARIFFS! 😆

First start naming the executive orders assigning such tariffs unilaterally. Then we can look and see if she was Speaker at the time.

No. No. An executive order is simply the president directing how his administration will interpret and enforce a given law or power the Executive has.

Congress has authority over commerce with foreign countries. The reason why the president can exercise authority here is because Congress has granted the president that authority.
It can be removed by Congress repealing that authority.

What has Ms. Pelosi done to REMOVE that power from a president?
Nothing. And that is because the Democrats are not against the idea of a president setting tariff rates.

An old video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urging Congress to retaliate against China’s tariffs against the United States is going viral for how much it sounds like President Donald Trump’s current tariff policies.

Trump's policy is unhinged

Nancy's was not.

A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE

I realize you will never hear this from Fox, the propaganda arm of the GOP.

The thing here is that the Democrats have long been the party of protectionism and tariffs.
The GOP has expropriated that issue from them.
There really isn't a free trade party in the USA.

Just heard, I believe Stephen Miller being interviewed about the tariffs. Whoever it was, this White House aide was talking about slave labor in Vietnam, "a race to the bottom" etc. that these tariffs were designed to fight.
We would have heard the same from an aide to a President Harris.
So you think tariffs on Vietnam are going to free the "slaves"? More likely these policies will turn Americans into slaves begging the billionaires for scraps. Stephen Miller is a avowed white nationalist and fascist.

You "sense" that, do you?

We in the MAGAsphere are always the victims, so naturally we hate being victimized.

Unlike libertyrose, I have a very tough skin, but the repeated and unnecessary lashings on my naked back wear even on me, so why don't you show some empathy and consideration for the poor woman, please?

MAGA.

I think that he sounds like Bernie Sanders when he talks like that.

As always, progressives are free to claim reducing tax rates and free trade are a key to economic success.

I don't think they will ever make that argument. So they will be reduced to continuously babbling about 'fascism' and 'white nationalism' as the poor substitute.

Thats complete BULLSHIT, and you know it.....which is why you make the feign follow-up contradicting it.

Tariffs would have been fine if they weren't written by a moron that places tariffs on uninhabited islands.

Tariffs would have been fine if they didn't put 26% tariffs on countries that have ZERO TARIFFS ON THE US.

Tariffs would have been fine if there was some sort of policy to offset the pain of them.

Tariffs would have been fine if there was some sort of goal or time frame listed so we knew what to expect.

Tariffs would have been....well you get the idea.

I may be open to the idea that US trade needs to be re-evaluated but I'm not open to the idea of basically ruining the US economy and international standing with the kind of policy that a four year old would come up with.

As for mindless, if you're happy watching everything burn then I'm assuming you don't have a pot to piss in right now. This isn't going to improve anything in your life.
Breathing is awesome for you...unless Trump tells you you should do it.

You'd be a goner in 3 minutes.

This thread is based on the argument that Dems are hypocrites because they did what Donny is doing.......now the argument is Dems are insane for not doing what is natural.

The lengths your lot goes to to avoid responsibility never ceases to amaze.

So you don't believe in capitalism then? What do you believe in? Trump's tariffs are communist in nature. They give Govt. control over corporations and will do nothing to "bring back" manufacturing. It will cripple our exports and bankrupt dozens of our corporations. It should be clear to you that Trump is an authoritarian who cares nothing about the American people.

At a more fundamental level though tariffs are anti-capitalist. Capitalism thrives when capital can freely flow to where it’s most efficiently utilized. It’s not called “free” trade because it’s costless. There are always trade-offs in trade. It’s called free trade because traders are free to choose where they will allocate their trade. We let corporations choose where to allocate capital and labor because we know that free markets are better at allocating capital than governments. So it’s especially odd to see the party of free market capitalism promoting a policy agenda that is very much against free market individualism. It’s even weirder to see that party promoting a corporate tax increase that will ultimately end up being a consumer, labor and shareholder tax. I don’t intend to sound political. This is just a basic fundamental truth of free trade and Capitalism. If you think the government is great at fixing things then tariffs are for you. If you’re a true Capitalist then you should despise tariffs.

This isn’t coming back.

And speaking of fundamentals – let’s talk about the core reason why tariffs in the USA are fundamentally flawed. The USA is a tech and services economy. Manufacturing is no longer our strength. It was a dominant industry in the USA when we were an emerging market economy in the 1800s and early 1900s. But manufacturing has been in a terminal decline in the USA because the US economy has evolved into the most diverse economy in the world. And much of that is dominated by technology and services industries. Our core competency isn’t manufacturing stuff. It’s designing the intellectual property and technology that improves how all those things are built. This is abundantly clear in the US stock market and its incredible dominance in the last 30 years where US tech firms have utterly decimated the competition.

This doesn’t mean we don’t build stuff or manufacture anything. Manufacturing is still a $2.5T industry in the USA. That’s the entire size of the Canadian economy. So we’re not talking about some tiny industry. It’s just that the rest of the US economy has become much larger with time because we’ve evolved from an emerging market manufacturing economy into a developed technology economy. And there’s no unscrambling that egg. In fact, the egg is only going to get more and more scrambled because the way technology is evolving we will have robots manufacturing virtually everything before long. You just can’t make a developed tech economy magically transform back into an emerging market manufacturing economy.

As the article observed, it is strange to see the party of "free market individualism" promote policies the opposite.

There is no 'free trade' party in the USA any longer.

Are the progressive opponents of Mr. Trump going to take up the mantle?
Doubtful.

A tariff strategy against China is not inherently bad if there is yah know, a strategy.

Tariffs can be a tool when combined with industrial policy that can be effective if there is a specific industry that you wish to address.

I have no problem with trying to curb Chinas rise and to temper its ambition.

But to do so requires smart strategy and it requires allies and instead what do we get?

Blanket tariffs on China AND on your allies (as well as the rest of the world), as well as threatening the sovereign territory of some of those allies with annexation...

So I'm not sure what's accomplished by bringing this up.

This pretty much sums it up.

Speaking of POS hypocrites, our President is golfing at a Saudi financed golf tournament at his Miami golf course while our stock market is down 2600 points again today because he willed it so. Watching our country suffer while golfing is Trump's dream job.

So you are embracing communism then? All our corporations are now under Trump's control and you think that is good for you? Democrats are still supporting capitalism like always. You think we are going to thrive without our over $3 trillion in exports that we enjoyed last year?

Corporations are not under Trumps "control."

Corporations are not under Trumps "control."
Yes they are. He is in control of all our markets now. He can give or take away any companies profits at the stroke of a pen. That is what this is all about. Total control of our Govt. and corporations and you don't matter. We are all at Trump's mercy now and Trump has no empathy. How do you think that will work out?

FLASHBACK: 30 years ago, Nancy Pelosi demanded Congress confront Chinese tariffs on American goods

An old video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urging Congress to retaliate against China’s tariffs against the United States is going viral for how much it sounds like President Donald Trump’s current tariff policies.

The video, recorded on the House floor in June 1996, featured the lawmaker urging her colleagues to fight against the "status quo" trade policies that had contributed to America’s trade deficit with China. She specifically called on lawmakers to address the fact that American tariffs on Chinese goods paled in comparison to Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods.

"In terms of tariffs, it’s interesting to note that the average U.S. MFN [Most Favored Nation] tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States is two percent, whereas the average MFN tariff on U.S. goods going into China is 35 percent."

The congresswoman asked, "Is that reciprocal?" She also went on to call the U.S.-China trade relationship a "job loser."..................

China was a very different economy back then. And it was just China, not the whole ****ing world.

.....except Russia, unsurprisingly
