FLASHBACK: 30 years ago, Nancy Pelosi demanded Congress confront Chinese tariffs on American goods

A tariff strategy against China is not inherently bad if there is yah know, a strategy.

Tariffs can be a tool when combined with industrial policy that can be effective if there is a specific industry that you wish to address.

I have no problem with trying to curb Chinas rise and to temper its ambition.

But to do so requires smart strategy and it requires allies and instead what do we get?

Blanket tariffs on China AND on your allies (as well as the rest of the world), as well as threatening the sovereign territory of some of those allies with annexation...

So I'm not sure what's accomplished by bringing this up.
There is a strategy it's just you don't know it because the news media is telling you Elon Musk is trying to see if your text dollars and that's horrible for some reason people freak out about that instead of reading about tariff policy.

I think sometimes Donald Trump says particularly bombastic seats just to figure it leads slop the pigs at the media.

FLASHBACK: 30 years ago, Nancy Pelosi demanded Congress confront Chinese tariffs on American goods

An old video of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urging Congress to retaliate against China’s tariffs against the United States is going viral for how much it sounds like President Donald Trump’s current tariff policies.

The video, recorded on the House floor in June 1996, featured the lawmaker urging her colleagues to fight against the "status quo" trade policies that had contributed to America’s trade deficit with China. She specifically called on lawmakers to address the fact that American tariffs on Chinese goods paled in comparison to Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods.

"In terms of tariffs, it’s interesting to note that the average U.S. MFN [Most Favored Nation] tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States is two percent, whereas the average MFN tariff on U.S. goods going into China is 35 percent."

The congresswoman asked, "Is that reciprocal?" She also went on to call the U.S.-China trade relationship a "job loser."..................

This is correct, @libertyrose - Trump and the Republicans who support him have indeed decided to latch on to bad ideas from the Left.

I wonder what is next - price controls?

Haha...so Trump is just like Nancy Pelosi?

Hahahahahaha...

MAGA who claims to be "very conservative" says the fact that Democrat once suggested use of strategic tariffs against China means that any amount of tariffs on any amount of countries for any reason is perfectly fine. This MAGA also puts "liberty" in their account name.

To be fair, if MAGA had enough logical capacity to understand why simple fallacies are wrong we wouldn't be in this mess.

The problem now is that, because of inaction over the last 40 years, not only do we have problems with China, but we also have problems with our "allies".

During Trump's first term, he focused on the larger problem...China. But he also had intentions to deal with our allies, especially the EU, too. Well, we know he got interrupted and things got much worse during that interruption so now he has to deal with ALL of it as quickly as possible.

That's what he's doing right now.

Trying to radically change the entire way a 27 trillion dollar economy works overnight is much more likely to burn the system to the ground as "fix" anything.

No. No. An executive order is simply the president directing how his administration will interpret and enforce a given law or power the Executive has.

Congress has authority over commerce with foreign countries. The reason why the president can exercise authority here is because Congress has granted the president that authority.
It can be removed by Congress repealing that authority.

What has Ms. Pelosi done to REMOVE that power from a president?
Nothing. And that is because the Democrats are not against the idea of a president setting tariff rates.

How does our current problem the Dems fault? Nobody ever demanded an absurdly conceived tariff policy until trump got involved. The question isn't if Congress passed laws to cede the authority, the question is if Congress authorized stupidity in the white house. No, no Dem ever conceived such a idiotic ploy so the authority argument hardly matters.

So a troll is a good president. Ok.

Progressives like to say Trump thinks he is a 'king' issuing unilateral edicts and so forth.
And yet here we are- Trump is issuing unilateral edicts on tariffs and the criticism by progressives is that the tariffs themselves are poorly conceived.

Not whether Trump, or any president, should have that authority.

I don't care if he has the authority. What good is the authority if he uses it for boneheaded policies.

You can't blame Trump's blunders on the Dems.

I’ve been away for a while.

You’re still not very good at this.

In this case it’s obviously both.

Not going to.
Am blaming Dems for the concept

Say what???
Have you been drinking?

Not going to.

Am blaming Dems for the concept of what? That Congress allowed the president to call for tariffs under certain conditions? I don't know what you're saying here.

No it was in the error.

I meant to say I think Donald Trump says bombastic things sometimes in order to slap the pigs in the media.
And it still means we support a president who's a troll.

Trolls the media which makes up lies about him? Tries their best to get him murdered? What's worse getting the media to go after bait or assassinating a Presidential candidate?

Cool story, bro.... but not an argument for across the board tariffs applied to everyone without reason.

Trolls the media which makes up lies about him? Tries their best to get him murdered? What's worse getting the media to go after bait or assassinating a Presidential candidate?
What lies has the media made up about Trump????? Most of the lies are made up by Trump and sold to his media, who then bring that nonsense.... But what "lies" (unsubstantiated or allegations without merit) has the media made up. There is enough complete ugliness about Trump that no one needs to "make stuff up."

This 'poor little misunderstood Donald" act is quite tiresome and very delusional by those that assert such. It is usually told by Trump supporters to themselves to try to legitimatize the illegitimate. My guess is the only lies here are what you are telling yourself.

This ought to be good (if you have the guts to respond with some examples, but I doubt you actual have anything substantive behind your claim).

Trump praised white supremacists at Charlottesville, Trump instigated an insurrection. Trump committed a crime by having documents. Trump over valued his property. Trump sexually abused E Jean Carroll. That's just off the top of my head.

I bet you believe he did every one of these things don't you?

I listed several.

  1. Trump was involved in an insurrection was actually litigated. He lost, he did it. Which not only negates it as a lie (as I said, it has a basis for the allegation)... it actually makes it fact. That said, there is tons of official evidence on the web that says this initiated it. Since the people did not get their trial and he is a politician, its not a lie to take the position he did.
  2. Trump did illegally possess federal documents and obstructed justice by not returning them when ordered by the court as well as tried to hide them. Since the people did not get their trial and he is a politician, its not a lie to take the position he did, as it is very well supported by evidence.
  3. Trump sexually abusing E Jean Carroll was also litigated. He was found culpable. Again, that makes it non only "not a lie", it actually makes it a fact.
  4. Trump overvaluing properties, was also litigated. He was found culpable. Again, that makes it non only "not a lie", it actually makes it a fact.

I don't believe anyone accused Trump of praising white supremacists, they took issue that he did not renounce them and argued a degree of equivalency.

I listed several.
No you didn't. You really missed the mark. None of those things are lies; actually the opposite is true, saying those things are not true is actually a lie. You got anything else?

Trump involved in an insurrection was actually litigated.
But it's false. He wasn't that was media lie you just believe because you are ideologically captured. You want Trump to be a villain so you believe anything said about him that's negative.

You are ideologically captured. It's no use talking to you. You have been brainwashed.
No you didn't. You really missed the mark.
I did. Your devotion to your cult is admirable but it has mislead you.
None of those things are lies;
They were all lies.
actually the opposite is true,
Because liars told you so a and your bigotry clouds your judgment
saying those things are not true is actually a lie. You got anything else?
Well there is no common ground you and I will never agree so no use continuing this.

It's a fruitless endeavor and I will not consider any thing you say on the topic in the future.

Trolls the media which makes up lies about him? Tries their best to get him murdered? What's worse getting the media to go after bait or assassinating a Presidential candidate?

You've acknowledged he's trolling since you've now told me why you think he does it.

I've seen media lies to defend him, and besides, if they're really lies then he can defend himself. You've said the media tried to get him murdered and that shows me your opinions and subjective interpretations are imaginary.

I don't think I've seen such an overt support of trolling before, much less about the president of the United States being one.
