Do anything to combat global warming in Glenn Beck’s office? You’re fired.
To prove his case against global warming, which Beck labels a “load of socialist, communist crap,” the right-wing talk-show host announced his war against energy-efficient light bulbs.
On air, he asked a staffer to write a memo that threatened to fire anyone caught using one. The YouTube video of the moment was picked up by Grist.
"I'm dead serious," Beck said on his radio program, as his employees titter nervously. "I fire the person that starts to purchase fluorescent light bulbs, unless that is the only light bulb for a very specific reason, and I want to be cc'd on what that reason is." How about to light a dark room? Is that reason enough?
But Beck’s vendetta against eco-friendly office supplies doesn’t end there. He told one worker not to purchase any more recyclable spoons, either.
“If anyone does anything in this company because of global warming, they’re fired,” he said. He’s OK with saving trees, though. Except for writing all those memos.
Perhaps Beck didn’t get the memo that a majority of Americans believe climate change is real.

Good for him, on the CFLs at least. You're supposed to call a hazmat team just to change those suckers and the light from them is horrendous. Pollution wise they're a massive fail. Whereas, everything about the old incandescents is easily recyclable.

That's a silly stance for Beck to take. There's nothing wrong with reducing our dependence on carbon based fuels as a general principle even if AGW is a load of hooey.

And once again it doesn't matter how many pinheads believe in AGW, they are still pinheads and still wrong.

Yep, the 'majority' of voters elected Obama.....I see a correlation! 8)

We use CFLs and would use LEDs if they weren't so expensive.

I think the CFL's have mercury in them. Either way, I like most people I imagine, forget that and toss them more often than I recycle them because there are only a couple places in my area to do it that I know of and they are out of sight and out of mind.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Every time the rodeo clown opens his mouth I die a little on the inside, knowing there are some people who take him seriously.

Seriously though, as others have stated, is there something wrong with using less power in the first place whether you acknowledge global warming or not? Shouldn't conservatives want to conserve resources?

Yes and they have for a long time.

Bulbs that contain mercury

Fluorescents, including linear straight tubes, U-shaped, circular and compact fluorescents (the spiral type commonly used in homes).
Neon bulbs
Ultraviolet bulbs (often used to disinfect drinking water)
High-intensity discharge bulbs (HID). These bulbs are commonly used for outdoor lighting and many commercial building settings. HID bulbs include:
Mercury vapor
Metal halide
High pressure sodium

I mainly like them because most last for years.

That's ridiculous. You can change a CFL the same way you do any other bulb.

Usually I think Beck is crazy, but he has this one right. Just because a majority of Americans believe climate change is real doesn't mean Global Warming is real. Climate Change will always occur in cycles, but this idea of man-made global warming, utter nonsense.

I disagree - I'm no eco-terrorist but I have to say I love the CFLs and the light they produce - it's cleaner and brighter and the bulbs last forever - I've had them all over the house for almost a decade and I've had to change out 3 I think in all that time - conventional bulbs would burn out practically as soon as you put them in - and the electricity costs are significantly less.

This is one old, conservative, fogey who's sold - especially since they've been redesigning some so they fit now in some types of lights you couldn't use them in before. And they say not to use them outside, but I've had them in my outside lights for years and years and I tell you I don't miss getting up on a ladder a couple of times a year to change out a bulb, sometimes in the snow.

I'm all for eco-friendly changes that are convenient, cost effective and efficient.

There's a reason why that sounds too silly to be true.

Glenn Beck is a poser...if I had a business I'd only allow the direct burning of fossil fuels in large quantities in order to light and keep warm my place of business. Electricity is for tree huggers and Climate Change hoaxers.

To be fair to clownboy, if one of these CFLs breaks it is almost like calling out a hazmat team to clean up. But to just change one out for another, not so dangerous at all.

Not to the extent the environmentalists try to make us believe. Not to the extent that requires new light bulbs, new cars, new lifestyles.

And you equate that with Global Warming? Which is what I was referring to?

I'm using it as an example we can effect the environment on a massive scale. The dust bowl is another one.

I didn't deny that we can have an impact on the environment, but that is different than asking about climate change, you are trying to interchange the two and they are not equal.

....Even though the patent issue would not be completely resolved for many years, General Electric’s strength in manufacturing and marketing the bulb gave it a pre-eminent position in the emerging fluorescent light market. Sales of "fluorescent lumiline lamps" commenced in 1938 when four different sizes of tubes were put on the market used in fixtures manufactured by three leading corporations, Lightolier, Artcraft Fluorescent Lighting Corporation, and Globe Lighting, two based in New York City. During the following year GE and Westinghouse publicized the new lights through exhibitions at the New York World’s Fair and the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. Fluorescent lighting systems spread rapidly during World War II as wartime manufacturing intensified lighting demand. By 1951 more light was produced in the United States by fluorescent lamps than by incandescent lamps.[15]......Fluorescent lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No I'm not trying to interchange the two. I said it is an example evidence mankind can effect the environment on a massive scale.
