You can't. You can only really blindly accept it in order to justify a political and social belief system that has been pummeled into your head by outlets like Fox News. How can you defend such illogical nonsense?
Every single president's policy in recent years has implemented elements of "socialism". The United States runs on what's called a mixed economy. We have elements of both socialism and capitalism. So going and criticizing someone for being a "socialist" for no good reason is frankly stupid. To be fair a number of conservatives on this site don't think like that. They will criticize President Obama for having socialist policies, but not of being communist/marxist/socialist. But both sides fall to faulty logic like that.
OK so this just had to be said. It's probably been said before, but it apparently needs to be said again. So OK. After reading a few posts by conservatives on here and many more on other websites not to mention having watched Glenn Beck scream into the camera like a mad, deranged lunatic (his camerman must be drenched with saliva at the end of every show) you clearly need a lesson in logic re: Obama, the "Marxist", the "socialist", the "Nazi". Your arguments usually run something like this:
First premise: Obama believes in socialized medicine
Second premise: Karl Marx believed in socialized medicine
Conclusion: Obama is a Marxist
This is tantamount to arguing as follows:
First premise: All dogs are animals
Second premise: All cats are animals
Conclusion: All dogs are cats
How can you defend such illogical nonsense? Please I really want to know because when I read stuff like that I become more and more convinced that the human race is completely and utterly doomed.
Labeling yourself as Conservative is really like putting a very vague generalist tag on yourself. Conservative could range from very moderate, sensible and perhaps closer to centrist really, all the way to bat-**** insane right-wing like Glenn Beck.I'm a Conservative.
I believe in Universal Healthcare.
I don't like President Obama.
Extrapolate from that.

Ha! You're right, of course. Maybe I'll have to redefine myself. ;-) Actually, though, I'd think that the more important issue is how others define me. And that tends to change depending on the topic at hand. Any advice? ;-)

Yes I know. That is why I said they won't label President Obama as socialist, but attack policies that are socialist. And it isn't stupid. You turn socialist into a bad word and then put it with the person you are running against. It makes people not want to vote for a socialist person, even if the candidate isn't really socialist.

One of my favorite adds during the local elections in 2010 was one state congressmen pointing out that the other called social security a "socialist" program. This was supposed to prove why he was unfit for office, because he thought SS was socialist. One of the better laughs that year.
SS is a socialist program, after all what is the first word that is used here...Social and by definition it is: social; Adjective/ and for the noun; Socialist. One of my favorite adds during the local elections in 2010 was one state congressmen pointing out that the other called social security a "socialist" program. That highlights the problem with any label(and why I bitch about them so much). For me:
Liberal
For gun rights
Veteran
Law and Order
Against Hate Crime laws
And I could go on. Some of those actually are liberal positions, but none are associated with tea drinking, elitist, troop hating commie, socialist liberals in the minds of many.
On the other hand, it's fun when people start debating me based on my label
I would have liked to have seen that add as well, SS is more like a ponzi sceme benefactors withdrawaling since it's inception with no balance to cover the withdrawals, this was doomed to fail with from the beginning. That is why I found it amusing. I forget the exact wording of the add, but it was along the lines of "would you trust some one who thinks SS is socialist".

Beck is a martian.
surrealistpenguin logic:
First premise: I've seen a conservative (or a few) make this argument.
Second premise: All conservatives think exactly alike.
Conclusion: All conservatives make this argument.
