I hate getting old... but it's better than the alternative.

If you hit a bear in the nuts, be prepared to die.

Something I used to hear my grandma say when I was a kid.

Beggars can't be choosers.

I was in high school (9th grade) when I read the works of Langston Hughes. I asked myself how he could know my life. My favorite poem from Langston Hughes:

Mother to Son

BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

This year, I enter my 40th year coaching high school sports. For the last two years, I have been a volunteer since I am retired. I have been the head coach in four different sports and have the pleasure of having outstanding players and parents join me in that journey. My coaching staffs have been comprised of former players of mine and that made the journey a lot of fun.

Here are some of my coaching sayings. I don't know where they came from but have known the majority of them these 40 years.

Repetition is no fun but it's the reason we have won.

Take one day off and you know it. Take two days off and your opponent knows it. Take three days off and everyone knows it.

Don't be sorry, be better.

Failure to hit the bull's eye is never the fault of the target. To improve your aim improve yourself.” – Gilbert Arland.

If you believe in something, no matter what
'Cause it's better to be hated for who you are

Yup. Since we're into lyrics it's stuff like this won a boy from Duluth a Nobel Prize in literature:

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow
