I did a poll on this about 2 years ago but since the arrest of Terry Jones has brought the issue back to the forefront and we have a number of members who weren't here then, I thought I'd ask it again.
If legislation were proposed making it illegal to burn or destroy the Quran (at least publicly) would you support it?
Incidentally, the first time I asked this, the "no" vote won overwhelmingly. I'm curious if the results will be largely the same.
Poll on the way.
It is not dangerous(yelling fire in a crowded theater) and it isn't libel, so I see it as protected. People should be free to burn religious books and flags and what not, they have every right to be assholes.
But who is Terry Jones?
Real life troll and all around douchebag who tests our commitment to free speech.

Much as I think Islamophobes are akin to racists, no I would not ban such a thing.
Overall I don't see the point of it, as much as I detest religion... I have never felt the need to desecrate anyone's holy book.
I just don't have the time, the inclination, the boredom or the hatred in my heart to do so.

He was not arrested for planning to burn Korans though, he was arrested for driving around with 3000 of them soaked in kerosine. Major, major difference.
There's laws and rules for transporting flammable material like kerosene around on roadways, he didn't follow them. Its not about free speech as it is about safety and "hey buddy if you have an accident there's going to be a fireball"
Thank you but non sequitor. I didn't make any claims about why Jones was arrested, though some do believe the stated charges are simply a pretext.
By saying the stated charges are a pretext you are making a claim about why Jones was arrested or at least making a claim about what he was not arrested for.
One of these days we'll have to explore the term "Islamaphobe" and what it means. Islam being a religion, I'm wondering if there are also "Christianaphobes" and "Budhistsaphobes". Does being critical or disrespectful to any particular relgion make one a "phobe"?
Anyway, that's a different discussion.
