What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

Speak No Evil

Have to be willing to forgive the characters ignoring red flags, but decent drama filled with bad guys getting their deserved comeuppance. Free if you have Peacock.

Just finished The Six Triple Eight:

As a movie, it is decent but nothing great, but the portrayal of Charity Adams was simply great. Adams was a huge figure, a black woman who got 2 bachelor degrees in the 30s, and proved to be an incredible leader in the army. When she encountered a problem, she would find a solution, and succeed at beating that problem. A very real person who achieved more than almost anyone. Her portrayal in a movie makes this worth watching. Kerry Washington plays her, and just does a fantastic job.

We watched Red One on Xmas Day, free now on Amazon Prime.

Great new Xmas movie for older kids (a bit too much violence for little kids IMO altho no blood or death). It was fun for adults too, there were a lot of connections to Marvel movies, probably X-men too. It was pretty much as expected but funny, both corny and subtle humor. It had "heart" and "a message" too of course but Xmas movies are supposed to :) And Chris Evans is always hot.

We enjoyed it, as well. The film seemed rushed and went too fast over some areas and not enough over others. The missus read that the production was trying to get released before the passing of the other main character, who was near 100yo. Lena Derriecott.

Watched this the other evening. Mildly entertaining, but mostly a rip-off of Die Hard II & III. Terrorist in the airport at Christmas and the bad guy watching and communicating with the protagonist. Too long, one of those films that you say, “hell we’ve been here this long, may as well see the end.”

Jason Bateman is always good, imo.

Not sure it was a "great" movie, but it was very enjoyable...I'll give it a 9 out of 10. The Great Unknown...

To be fair, I am a big fan of both Timothee Chalamet AND Bob Dylan, so I might be prejudiced....but I think there's at least one Oscar nomination here.

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, HULU

I barely remembered her, just knew she was Keith Richards' girlfriend. I figured she died of a drug overdose pretty young. Turns out she lived quite a bit longer, altho there werent a lot of surprises in the kind of life she lived. It was still pretty interesting tho. I didnt realize she was in Barbarella with Jane Fonda...such a hilariously kitschy movie.

6.5 out of 10 stars.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023), its a chapter in Stoker's Dracula about the ill-fated ship the count was traveling in on his way to England. God awful movie. Though the acting was kinda decent, the awful script with plot holes bigger than a ship just sunk it. In most horror movies you expect stupid characters to do stupid things, but the ones in here were simply the dumbest ever. Dont waste your time. Rating 2/10

The Order (2024) Jude Law stars as an FBI agent in the true story about the white supremacist movement in 1980s PNW. It has some good spots, but never really picks up steam. The crap in the end about equating white supremacists with the J6 rioters is just totally retarded too. Why would Hollywood purposely try to falsely smear half of their audience? Dont they know it would only drive ticket sales away? Morons. Rating 4/10

Sector 31. Star Trek movie spin-off on Paramount+. Has Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and almost no one else you've seen before, probably because her salary was huge. (Actually I have seen the male lead before). I like her a lot tho.

Think the A-Team crossed with a cartoon. Super cheesy Terran planet set. Incredibly unlikeable Vulcan-bot, so much I could barely look at him. I think he was supposed to be comic relief sometimes but he was just grotesque...slapping drama and laughter on a Vulcan?

There were some good laughs but someone actually asked "do you want fries with that?"

And the ending set it up for a new mission, so they're planning a sequel? Dear God no.

3/10 :(

The Return (2024) Ralph Fiennes in the latest adaptation of the Odyssey, which specifically covers the last chapter of Homer's epic. King Odysseus washes ashore back in his home island of Ithaca, but nobody recognizes him. The palace has been taken over by suitors to the queen, who abuse the ancient code of hospitality. The beginning is excellent and so is the production values. However, by the middle part it starts to drag, and the final massacre scene feels too stagy to be believable. Also, the multicultural cast is a little too woke to be realistic. Rating: 6.5/10

Nosferatu (2024) Remake of the old German silent classic. I really had high hopes for watching this after hearing the buzz, but came out of it disappointed. The production values are excellent, but I found it to be too long and overly melodramatic. The subplot regarding Hutter's best friend and his family was unnecessary and just added to more filler time. The scenes that could have been very scary comes off as merely pedestrian, and the heroine's constant panic attacks and screaming became more annoying than frightful.

Too bad though, because the original silent movie was an obsession for me when I was a young kid. Having grown up on Christopher Lee's Hammer Films Dracula, the image of Orlock as a completely nonhuman demon was so fascinating, and the lasting influence of vampires being killed by daylight was started by this century-old movie. I was hoping for something that came close to the original, but in the end, it was just meh. Rating: 5/10

Stylish with great cinematography, just not entertaining enough for me. Agree with your 5/10 score.

Arcadian (2024) Nic Cage and his two young sons battling monsters in a post apocalyptic cheapie. It started out kinda interesting, but quickly devolved after 15 minutes in. The creatures are pretty inconsistent, being totally lethal in some scenes to being total pushovers that can easily be killed/captured by teens in the next. Meh. Skipped through much of the final half to finish the movie. Rating 4/10

September 5 (2024) Historical thriller that dramatizes the ABC sports crew during the 1972 Munich Olympics and the terrorist attack that followed. Based on a true story, it as really interesting to see that even the smallest of decisions they made had a huge impact on live news reports that became standard for the industry. Its a tight little movie that takes place in a single setting and kept my interest throughout. Well made, and with good performances. The technical aspects are especially a standout, effortlessly blending in the movie with the actual historical footage. Rating 8.5/10

The Brutalist (2024) Clocking in at 3 and a half hours, this was indeed a brutal watch. Adrien Brody stars as a European WW2 refugee in America, and his trials and tribulations as a master architect of the brutalist school. There was some brilliant individual scenes and the photography is stunning, but this could have easily been edited down to under two hours for a faster paced drama and would have lost nothing. As it was, the movie was overhyped. Rating: 5.5/10

@PoS you are a harsh grader. I loved Arcadian!

The Quiet Earth. Did not know New Zealand could make films like these and they haven't since this release back in 1986! 10/10 FREE ON TUBI.

THE GORGE

Enjoyed - Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller were good in their roles.

Sort of a mash up of Action/Horror with a relationship story between the leads. Not perfect by any means but lively with a few unexpected turns. GIve a solid 7 rating.

Available on Apple+ TV

The Seed of the Sacred Fig. I'd give it an 8.5/10. Going on three hours, it is a bit long, but thrilling and kept my attention to the end. This movie was filmed in secret, in Iran, and depicts the current situation there. The actors and directors have been threatened and most are in exile.

Emilia Perez. On Netflix. Really good! I didnt know the story beforehand, only that it involved a demand by a Mexican cartel boss. Glad I could enjoy the twists and turns. Only problem is that since it's a "sometime" musical, it was hard to watch the dancing while I was reading the English subtitles for the songs. Sounds like a WASP problem to me!

(y) 9/10 because if there were some faults, the overall entertainment value, great acting, and heart were really there.

Companion - More balanced and "humanistic"portrayal of robots as companions. Still creepy but not as much as Megan. Megan 2.0 will be released soon BTW. Sophie Thatcher was very good in the lead. Really liked the film and recommend. Solid 8 ating.

Just watched the live action Mulan. It was really good. It certainly didn't stick to the animated completely, but the changes weren't bad, and even helped add to the story, imo. I really liked that they changed the love interest for her from the Commander to a fellow soldier.

Monsieur Spade-Netflix
Good acting til the final episode when it just seemed to use too many worn out cinema lines. The actor playing Sam Spade (Clive Owen) reminded me of Bogie.
It centers around a murder mystery of 5 nuns in a town in France during post world war 2 (1955-56) and at the same time the French civil war in Algeria. The town is still struggling with the actions of some of its residents as resistance fighters and its Nazi sympathizers. Some how the events of the past and present collide.

Anora Oscar winner and best actress. Streaming on HULU.

It was very good, good entertainment. If you wait a bit, it gets really funny, and then it gets Keystone Cops funny. It also has heart.

I saw Frank Oz’s 1999 comedy Bowfinger yesterday. Here’s what I wrote about the movie:

Last night, I saw this movie for the very first time. As a lifelong cinephile, I love movies about the movie industry. Bowfinger, in which the titular character, an earnest though untalented B-movie producer, makes an alien invasion flick featuring a Hollywood star without the latter’s knowledge or consent, isn’t nearly as great as other films in this subgenre, such as Mullholland Dr., The Player, or Adaptation, but it is very good and very funny. (I’d probably rank it alongside Get Shorty.) Frank Oz (aka Jedi Master Yoda) is a terrific director, and this is his magnum opus. And Steve Martin, who plays Bowfinger, and Eddie Murphy, who plays his unwitting star, did some of their best work in this film. There are a number of hilarious scenes, such as the one where Bowfinger makes an actor run across a freeway with cars zooming past—twice. One thing I loved about this movie is that it reminded me two favorites of mine, Ed Wood and The Disaster Artist. Ironically, Bowfinger is about a filmmaker who spends a couple thousand dollars on a movie that becomes a success and came out just two weeks after The Blair Witch Project, which became a monster hit on a similar shoestring budget. One thing that does confuse me about Bowfiner is that it cost $55 million. That may not seem like much today, given the ludicrously inflated budgets with which Hollywood studios bankroll their films (I heard that the new Snow White movie cost something like $370 million), but that was a lot in the late ‘90’s. Bowfinger takes place in one location (Los Angeles) and there are no grand special effects or action sequences. Perhaps Martin and Murphy’s salaries can account for this?
Highly recommended.
