replacement cat, my very best ever passed a month ago. Had to get another from the Rescue shelter.

He's a young neutered male - all grey. Just got him today, and have him confined to a room for the night.

The name should be able to break down to 1 syllable, for ease of calling him. all suggestions welcome!! :twocents:

I'll tell you the name when I finally decide.

I had a gray kitten that showed up here a couple of years ago, about 4 or so months old, and I thought he would stay, as he hung around for about a week, but then he disappeared. I had named him Earl Grey (yeah, I know it's more than one syllable, but I thought it was a cool cat name )

This is... most peculiar. I picked up a new kitten today, a gray tabby 10 week old. Ended up naming him Marvin (Hitchhiker's Guide Marvin) because he hissed at everything when I took him home.

"The Reverend Sharpton."

You should observe his behavior and demeanor for a few days to a couple weeks and then name him based on some salient characteristic he exhibits.

For instance, I (or family members) have had cats named Squeaker, Bright Eyes, Walter (after the cranky old man puppet from Jeff Dunham's show, because he was always grumpy and pissed off...), Fuzzball, Hunter, Loudmouth, Possum (looked like one), Dirtbag, and ****head (Siamese, mean as hell).

There's no such thing as a replacement cat (or dog, or snake, etc). They're all unique.

As such, I couldn't possibly tell you what to name him! He's unique, and only you know him.

I renamed my kitty. The name her previous owners gave her just didn't fit -- it was a generic, trendy name.

I was willing to wait to rename her, but her most striking personality characteristic presented itself on the very first night she was with me: she is eerily sensitive, despite being undersocialized.

I named her after a historical paranormal woo woman. Her name shortens to Pia. It's a good one, because cats respond the best to "eee" sounds. So perhaps that's something to keep in mind.

We have rescued over half a dozen cats this year. One we took from the animal shelter when looking for a cat that had disappeared that we had many years. This cat was the only cat that responded to callout out for the cat we lost, curiously was exactly the same color, size and look (pure black) and the shelter had bypassed putting it down because they thought it just too personable to do so. So we took it - gave it the same name as the lost cat.

Of the 3 others still with us, one was a kitten we rescued that appears dumped in the swamp when 3 weeks old, it somehow had survived 3 more weeks to us hearing it's faint cry out there. My wife coxed it in over a few days. It would have been dead probably within 48 hours. Totally starved, so week it couldn't hold itself up anymore, and stomach so bloated from worms looked like about to explode. That cat now is FANTASTIC in condition and behavior. But it never got it's meow back. Just a little bit of a squeak. So named him "Squeaky." Now the best behavior house-cat I've ever seen.

We also rescued a cat we found in the rubble of our warehouse that had burned down. Also starving. A kitten. Doing great. Grey in color and covered in soot. So named him "Smokey."

We later found another little kitten, starving, about 5 weeks old, in the debris. White with black spots. VERY brave and feisty little guy, yet desperate for affection too. Haven't picked a name yet. Waiting for one to come to mind.

We ALWAYS put rescue animals with another animal, plus personally "mother" it for a while so it is people friendly. We don't think any animal should be alone, just no person would like be keep always alone. So all our pets are in teams of 2 or more, no exceptions. A young one with an older one seems to work best, even if a kitten with an older dog. So far, the older animal always has assumed a parental role, even if a male, towards the infant.

If you rescue a starving, desperate animal, it will never forget it and will always turn to you if hurt or afraid.

Rumplecatskin
Ringil
Kalbi
Asher

These are my reserve names but I doubt I'll ever get another cat sinc trying to outlive the current crop is enough of a challenge. So help yourself.:kitty:

my goodness. yes he's hissing and growling a bit ( and the to poster who said wait a few days for behavior - good idea).
I suppose he's scared. I just went in and played a little string with him, but he ran back and hid behind the bookcase.

Try this.

Go in the room. Sit down quietly. Put a cat treat or a smidge of tuna or something on the floor just in front of you.

Sit quietly and patiently; read a book if you like, just try not to move around or make much noise. Odds are good he will come out to investigate after a while; curiosity is a powerful motivator for cats, and he will smell the food and probably want it. It will give him a chance to accustom himself to you in a non-threatening way, as well as beginning to associate you with food, which for cats is a big positive association.

I'd focus more on petting him at first rather than playing, if he exhibits fright or nervousness.

Go slow and be patient.

It's a good idea. I've had so many cats over my lifetime -always one at a time, except when I was leasing a farmhouse for a few years.

I tend to forget how to acclimate them. they are pretty adjustable to their surroundings. Think I would have that innate knowledgeby now - i do know all creatures need their own times .

I'll go read with him tomorrow..Thank you.
I worked all day, and tomorrow is another work day, so I'm entertaining myself for the night here, and will do that tomorrow when I get home from work.

I sort of do the same thing -- one ferral cat -- one kitten rescued from along a river -- I pretty much completely ignored them for days, except to say "hi!" when they came into the room. Interesting what Smokey says about eeeee sounds. We named the kitten Bob-Bob, but she responds best to Bobbiddy. The other's name is Shorty Pants -- and if I really want him to skedaddle over, I call him Shorteeeeeeee!!! Who knew?

yes. my late cat was named Sneakers, he had black boots and all grey. I called him sneeeeek -the "e" sound..somethingto thin k of

Dorian? After Dorian gray. It's a great story.

Name: Cat

I have had some cats that carried the name Cat for quite a while. In truth, you have to have at least two of something before individual names are essential.

My son's first dog was quite a tribulation in the naming thereof... my son was small (4) and wanted to change his name every two weeks. I ended up calling him Dawg and continued to call him Dawg even after my son finally picked a name (Mack) and stuck with it.

Ryugi
Sota
Kyon
Rei <~my favorite, pronounced "Ray" and means, depending on kanji used, cool, or wise, or beautiful

I'm sorry for your loss. It never gets easier, does it? :(

As for a name, how about Nickle... Nick for short?

TY for the compassionate reply. He was a very special cat, would actually walk with me unleashed.

No. I don't think ANY loss ever gets easier,.only time dulls the pain, and lets one recall the joys with out the loss.
Life is long, we walk with many, but in the final analysis we do walk alone. It is the journey that we recall as we age.

What i find compelling about Buddhist thought, is the idea that we alone have to power to self perfect out of cyclical rebirth.
No other animal - sentient or not - has this knowledge, and ability.

start touching him when he is eating. That is how I tame wild kittens. Feed them, they come for the food. After a few days they get used to the food coming and then I will start handling them over a little while, and then they never freaking go away.
