Not only have I never advocated taking anybody's guns away, I have even often warned against the dangers of doing just that. It will get a lot of citizens AND law enforcement killed! Bad idea.
I grew up with guns. My father shot competitively for his entire 22 years in the army, and I shot with him on those rare occasions when I lived near a base where he was stationed. He had enough medals and trophies for shooting to fill an entire room of the house. Even as a young teen, I was able to handle a regular service .45-1911. I was, and still am, a big lad. Later in life - my mid-20's - I shot skeet every month at Thunder Mountain, Ringwood NJ, with a group of friends from work. The only reasons I don't currently own a firearm are 1) I've never felt I needed one for personal protections, and 2) without some pretext, I live in a difficult city to get one legally, so I've never bothered.
I fully understand people who are fearful or paranoid, thinking they need a gun for personal protection - most especially if they have families they feel they have to protect. I may not agree with them, but I don't judge them. I don't have any wife and kids at home to worry about, and I've never worried about myself, even though I'm a White man who moved here to Harlem 18 years ago when I was one of only a handful of White people on my populated urban block. I've always shown respect to all my neighbors, I've always gotten the same in return, and I have dozens of friends here of every possible big city demographic. I'm sure you can imagine.
All that said, I am very much in favor of gun control efforts, most especially things that keep them out of the hands of felons, those who are too young, those with records of spousal abuse, those unable to safely handle them, etc. etc., so I will often chime in on threads where comments come from posters who mindlessly oppose any type of gun control, no matter how sane and well-thought out it may be, including long waiting periods and background checks for first time owners.

So the guy should have just let the kids steal his car?If a gun was pulled on me, then I'd have no problem taking out my own and pulling the trigger, given the chance. But that totally belies the point I was making. Auto theft is not a capital offense.
