The Swedish experiment of doing remarkably little about Covid-19

Sweden never experienced a single Delta wave, and now has the second lowest case rate in all of Europe. Its natural immunity was able to prevent any major Delta wave. Vaccines do not end pandemics. According to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, says that “vaccines alone will not end the pandemic.” Sweden long-term study of vaccine effectiveness found that after 6-7 months, "no effectiveness could be detected" from the Pfizer shot.”

I am amused as we almost daily treated to the chorus of our government and the drug makers proclaiming that another booster or vaccine is essential.

Wouldn't it be nice for auto makers if they could just say that a new car is required and that the government would buy everyone a new car tomorrow? Or a Sham-Wow? Or a new non-stick frying pan?

It's a nice racket. ;)

Sweden has been more successful with its relatively relaxed approach to managing the coronavirus pandemic than many of the E.U. countries and U.S. states above with strict lockdowns. The worst blind person is the one who refuses to see the truth.

Why is it that when other countries get better educational outcomes, or healthcare, or many other things, the American right says "that can't happen here because it violates rights". But then when Sweden gets a good result by simply appealing to the people to do what they think is right, the American response is "see, we should be just like that!"

America has herd immunity to common sense, I say. They can't be like Sweden, period.

You understand that "vaccines alone will not end the pandemic" and "vaccines will not end the pandemic" are quite different statements, right?

You claim that Sweden's "natural immunity" was able to prevent a major Delta wave. However, "natural immunity" is an individual thing, cities don't have it and nations don't have it. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, that you meant "herd immunity". Even so, it's impossible for Sweden with a low rate of infections, to have gotten anywhere near herd immunity without vaccines. Herd immunity was cited at 70% to 80% for the original variant, but due to higher infectivity is probably over 90% for Omicron.

Yeah you might need a booster after 6 or 7 months. Only a defeatist would think that's impossible.

Still posting nonsense I see, why don't you try and tell the truth for once about covid.

In deaths per 1 million, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Malta, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland have lower death rates than Sweden.

In infections per 1 million, Finland, Germany, Norway, Poland, Bulgaria, Italy, Iceland and Hungary have lower infections than Sweden.

And Sweden tests way fewer people than other European countries so the true number of infections might be a lot higher.

And as always, when compared to their neighboring countries Sweden scores immensely worse than Finland, Denmark and Norway.

The folks with pants on fire will continue to recommend that we light our hair on fire and run screaming off the cliff at their command.

The good news for EVERYONE is that Omicron seems to infect almost everyone and kills fewer than any of the previous Variants.

We'll need to wait a few months, probably, to find out if Omicron infections provide improved levels of ongoing immunity against the previous and upcoming strains.

Reuters | January 5, 2022

STOCKHOLM, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Daily coronavirus cases in Sweden soared to a record high, with the easily transmissible Omicron variant dominating, though numbers in intensive care remain well below previous pandemic peaks, the country's health agency said on Wednesday.

Case numbers have surged since November and in December the government tightened restrictions on public gatherings and urged citizens to work from home to help contain the spread. read more

On Wednesday it authorised the agency to mandate expanded use of vaccine passes, currently compulsory at some large public events, to cover restaurants and shopping centers.

Infections reached 17,320 on Tuesday, said Britta Bjorkholm, head of the health agency's department for disease control.

The response has been based on voluntary action. No lockdowns were enforced, the authorities gave recommendations like to stay home those that got symptoms, keep one meter distance from others, discourage the use of masks, and if possible, to avoid public transportation. Swedish schools have remained open during the pandemic for students between 6 to 16-year-olds.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden will extend its current pandemic measures by another two weeks, the minister for health said on Wednesday, as the Omicron variant is spreading at record speed.

The curbs mean bars and restaurants have to close at 2300 and there is a cap of 500 people inside larger indoor venues.

"We have an extremely high level of spread," Health Minister Lena Hallengren told a news conference. "The restrictions must remain in place for two weeks. If everything goes as planned and if the situation allows, the restrictions will be lifted after that."

Sweden has seen some 270,000 confirmed cases in the last seven days, but limited testing means the health agency believes the real number could be over half a million.

If the current Swedish cases are Omicron, it is likely, we are told by our experts, that the mitigation measures will be even less effective now than they would have been for the previous variants.

On Dr. Radio, there was a discussion that mentioned Omicron might be a Spiky Virus that developed as a parallel, but may not have been a direct offshoot of Covid 19. Nothing definite presented in the discussion.

My impression listening was, hopefully, Covid 19 is over. Good news. Also, that there might be a whole parade of these Spiky Viruses upcoming. Bad news.

PAUL JOSEPH WATSON FEBRUARY 10, 2022

Sweden, a country which never imposed significant lockdown measures, has officially declared that the COVID-19 pandemic is “over” and announced that it will be lifting all remaining restrictions.

“As we know this pandemic, I would say it’s over,” Minister of Health Lena Hallengren told Dagens Nyheter. “It’s not over, but as we know it in terms of quick changes and restrictions it is.”

According to Reuters, these comments were as close as possible to the country “effectively declaring the pandemic over.”

From today, bars and restaurants are allowed to stay open beyond 11pm again and there are no limits on guest numbers.

Attendance limits for indoor venues and vaccine passports, which were temporarily introduced in response to the Omicron variant, have both been scrapped.

Most testing rules for COVID-19 have also been abolished.

Sweden being the first country to declare the pandemic a done deal will be sure to infuriate lockdown fanatics and mask zealots.

Despite being on the receiving end of an intense backlash, the country’s approach of refusing to impose harsh lockdown restrictions has been completely vindicated.

Unlike other Europeans countries such as France and Spain which imposed draconian lockdown rules, Sweden’s COVID-19 death rate is comparatively better and the country is exiting the pandemic while other nations are refusing to lift restrictions for at least months more.

The Scandinavian country did not enforce strict mask mandates, with senior epidemiologist Anders Tengell asserting that face coverings were in fact “dangerous” because they provided a false sense of security while failing to stop the spread of the virus.

As we highlighted in October 2020, Sweden again refused to follow other European countries by re-imposing lockdown rules, arguing that those beset by loneliness and misery of being isolated had suffered enough.
Sweden scrapped almost all restrictions and testing for Covid. According to the minister of health Lena Hallengren “Covid would no longer be classified as a danger to society after the winter Omicron surge.” According to the epidemiologist Anders Tegnell “Sweden had one of the lower excess mortality levels in Europe” The draconian measures imposed by many governments, practically did not work against Covid. Well done Sweden, keep up the good work.

I know it's the Sweden thread, but what do people make of the even-better outcomes achieved by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan?

All the Asian nations have good results, but those who are still developing might have a paradoxical advantage: low obesity and diabetes, and the elderly are already culled by natural causes so those remaining are tougher. South East Asian nations have a third to a half the over-65 population which Western nations have.

None of those explain Japan, South Korea or Taiwan though. Maybe because they're islands, or effectively islands (SK)?

I'm looking forward to hearing President Zero say that he, and ONLY he, is responsible for ending the pandemic.

Tegnell said that “Swedish society is very different from the society in Norway and Finland, which we tend to disregard because we share a long history together and have similar languages. Covid doesn’t care about history or language, it cares about socio-economic status or migrant backgrounds or crowded housing. That’s where Sweden stands out in a Nordic context, but not so much in a EU context.”

By STEPHEN MOORE | February 25, 2022

What if two years ago, when COVID-19 first hit these shores, our politicians hadn’t panicked?

What if the government did what it has done every time we were confronted with a deadly virus, such as the Spanish flu or polio? Instead of locking down our schools, churches and businesses, the government could have simply informed citizens of the risks of getting sick and urged people to be extra careful about hygiene, stay out of crowded places and protect the vulnerable.

It turns out there was one country that mostly rejected lockdowns and let life go on as normal as possible under dire circumstances. That country was Sweden.

There were some restrictions and temporary lockdowns, but they were minimal.

Most of the population had the coronavirus or have been vaccinated, obtaining immunological protection. Sweden ended Covid restrictions February 9. When many countries implemented lockdowns as the coronavirus spread, Sweden opted for voluntary measures, kept schools open, most business never shutdown and mask were not recommended. It achieved better results than the U.S. and other E.U. countries with strict lockdowns. Sweden economy has remained stable, and it is projected to be 5% larger than before the pandemic.

That would have been the story in the US if the government was not populated by power hungry totalitarians controlled by self serving elitists at the State and Local levels.

Sweden has a different mix of freedoms to the US, and the more individualist and self-indulgent US culture would never have got the good result that Sweden did by voluntary responsibility. Sick people would have lined up outside hospitals, rather than voluntarily taking sensible precautions.

The US did not get a good result, but it could easily have been worse.

It could easily have been better by simply not paying bonuses to hospitals if they re-classified all patients to be Covid cases.

Paying people to do stuff often means that more people will do it.

The facts are pretty obvious. All of the mitigating measures mandated by the folks who recommended and employed them were ineffective at best or useless and hurtful at worst.

The numbers tell us this. Whether you are talking about the lock downs that reduced deaths by only 2% or the School Closings that hurt kids who were not threatened in the first place, our leaders were lying to us.

They knew they were lying to us and implemented all of the hurtful measures for no other reason then to free up more money to steal and then lied about it to cover their tracks.

Lying thieves.

The money was appropriated. The money disappeared. The lying thieves took it.

This simply reeks of right wing bullshit. All the hurtful measures reduced tax revenue!

Your source says that businesses run by women, minorities and veterans were prioritized (which I agree is bad) but the second example is someone who would have "made investments we've been putting off for two years" (article was July '21) which is clearly beyond the remit of helping businesses cover ongoing costs while shut down or restricted in customers. Ultimately the fund ran out of money, so what you're apparently objecting to is that the Federal government didn't send MORE taxpayer money to Portland.

This is in no way a sufficient source to support all the hyperbole in your post.

The fund ran out of money because the lying thieves stole the money and are lying about the fact that they stole it.

Evidence that the mitigation measures did not work?

81 million cases officially reported. Mine was not reported. I imagine that millions were suffered, but not reported. Just shy of 1 million Americans dead.

If you call that success, we have different measures of success. My measure is success. Yours seems to be failure.

The shut downs are thought to have reduced deaths by .2%.

<snip>
Lockdowns during the first COVID-19 wave in the spring of 2020 only reduced COVID-19 mortality by .2% in the U.S. and Europe, according to a Johns Hopkins University meta-analysis of several studies.

"While this meta-analysis concludes that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted," the researchers wrote. "In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument."
<snip>

All in all, the entire draconian array of ineffective mitigations were ill conceived political tools to make money available to steal and exert control of the citizens by the petty tyrants in our governments.

"The lying thieves" being who exactly? Businesses who lied about how much lockdowns were costing them?

I literally have no idea what you're talking about.

Actually "lockdowns" are defined in the study as all mandated restrictions. Some interesting results in there, like shutting down parks and beaches has a negative effect by making people gather indoors (whether they're permitted to or not). If you want to talk of businesses being shut down, though, read your own source:

The researchers also examined studies that focused on specific lockdown measures and found that the only intervention that reduced COVID-19 mortality was the closure of non-essential businesses, which reduced mortality by 10.6%, but this effect was likely driven by the closure of bars.

Ill conceived and malicious are two different things. Shutting down businesses was ill conceived. Shutting down schools was malicious.

The lying thieves are the lying thieves that we elect and the lying thieves that they appoint or hire.

The virus did what the virus did. The lying thieves did what they did.

The actions and mandates exacted against us by the lying thieves were vastly more hurtful and damaging than the impacts from the virus.

Sweden to Lift All COVID Travel Restrictions on April 1 | Travel Agent Central

The ban on entry to Sweden from countries outside the European Union/European Economic Area will not be extended and will cease to apply on Friday April 1, the country’s Ministry of Justice announced. This also means that the requirement to present vaccination and test certificates when entering Sweden will be removed.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, a temporary ban on entry into Sweden for foreign nationals traveling from countries outside the E.U./E.E.A. was introduced in March 2020. It has been regularly extended and the current entry ban applies until March 31, 2022. The Swedish government in its announcement noted that several countries in the E.U. and E.E.A. have recently lifted bans on entry into their respective countries and that its Public Health Agency no longer considers entry restrictions as a proportionate infection control measure.

On April 1, COVID-19 will no longer be classified as a threat to public health and a danger to society. Although the pandemic is not over, the Ministry of Justice says, it has entered a new phase thanks to high vaccination coverage combined with the lower risk of serious illness posed by the currently dominant virus variant, omicron.

Sweden lifted its entry ban on E.U./E.E.A. countries in February.

The New York Times reports that Sweden is averaging under 900 new COVID cases per day (eight per 100,000), a 34 percent drop in the past two weeks. There are .19 deaths per 100,000 daily and 74 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.
Beside the removal the ban on entry to Sweden, coronavirus is no longer considered a threat to the public, the requirement for quarantine or isolation have been removed, and those vaccinated no longer need to be tested. Again, Sweden is ahead of the curve.

Sweden successful approach in dealing with coronavirus

In March 2020, while the rest of Europe imposes severe restrictions on public life and closes borders and businesses, Sweden took a more relaxed approach to the coronavirus outbreak, it did not close its borders or its schools. Neither has it closed non-essential businesses or banned gatherings of more than two people, like in others EU countries. At that time only Belgium, Italy and the U.K. among 10 EU countries, had more death per one million population than Sweden.

Comparing this COVID-19 chart with the previous charts, the percent of the Death/1M pop column have increased for the U.S. states.

Sweden has been more successful with its relatively relaxed approach to managing the coronavirus pandemic than many of the EU countries and U.S. states with strict lockdowns. The draconian measures imposed by many governments, practically helped very little in the fight against Covid.

Germany, on December 20231, even lockdown unvaccinated people and proposed mandatory vaccinations. Its draconian measures backfire as on January 2022 people took to the streets to demonstrate against the restriction. German economy is projected to grow only1.8% in 2022.

Obviously, the government made the right decision and Sweden succeeded in its battle against the coronavirus. Time has demonstrated that their approach works. The government decided not to through the economy under the bus, and Sweden economy is projected to be 5% larger than before the pandemic.

When the US took the projection of Ferguson seriously and shut down EVERYTHING, they claimed their goal was to mitigate the disaster.

Ferguson said that if the US did NOTHING, then Covid would kill 2.2 Million. If the US did ANYTHING, that would drop the death toll to 1.1 million.

Having done EVERYTHING, the US death toll is now at 1.016 million and still rising.

The shut downs, mask mandates, school closings, election corruptions and everything else were useless in effect. If we had ONLY washed our hands more often and used hand sanitizer, we'd have hit the same result.

We were conned by the lying thieves so they could lie and steal even more than usual.

The countries in that area have a cultural toughness that is built in from the start:

Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience,[1][2] and hardiness[3][4] and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character. It is generally considered not to have a literal equivalent in English.

In America's woke need for safe spaces and censorship of ideas that "rock the boat", you are right....we'll never be like them.

If we had their same population, they'd kick our butts in any kind of conflict.
