(CNN)The city of Cleveland will pay $6 million to settle the federal lawsuit filed by the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy killed by police gunfire in November 2014, according to a settlement announced Monday in U.S. District Court.
According to terms of the settlement, the city acknowledges no fault in Tamir's death, which came after a 911 caller told of someone brandishing what appeared to be a toy gun in a city park.

Officer Timothy Loehmann, a trainee, shot Tamir moments after arriving in response to the call. Police said the boy was pulling out what was later found to be a toy gun when he was shot.

I think its still wrong that the officer and the dispatchers involved will not admit any wrongdoing. The seems to be just another continuation of allowing the powerful to buy their way out of justice being sought.

No fault costs them 6 million, hate to see what they'd have to pay if they had to admit fault.

They wont ever admit fault since they technically have sovereign immunity.

I guess you could call this an end to a terribly sad story. It makes sense for Cleveland to settle this, it would be that much worse if they decided to fight it out in front of the courts (and media coverage of.)

Awesome. Grandma knows kid is carrying around a pellet gun and threatening people. Kid spends an hour threatening people with the gun in a public park. Kid jumps up and approaches cop car while reaching for the gun. City pays 6 mil for the families stupidity.

Just another day in paradise.

Yup. probably shouldn't just jump out of the car and use deadly force. Maybe a bit better training, threat assessment, suspect assessment, and some less-than-lethal options are necessary for our police force. So long as they keep shooting first, asking questions later, we're going to see these sorts of lawsuits and governments paying out lots of money.

You should join the academy and show them how its done. Especially the part where you respond to a call about an individual with a gun, and then see the individual with the gun get up, walk towards your car and reaches for the gun and where you wait for them to shoot to determine if its a real gun or not.

So the city of Cleveland has to shell out $6M because this kid was stupid?
Ridiculous. They should give the family the kid's Darwin Award instead.

The cop wasn't the one waving around a toy that looked like a real weapon.

Tbh the whole situation, while unfortunate, I can see why the police officers fired. Tragic. The kid panicked, reacted in exactly the wrong way and the rest is history.

Couldn't hurt. Plus maybe teach the use of non-lethal force when necessary and not escalating situations to promote shooting folk.

6 million dollars because cops were quick on the draw. It won't end less we get better control of our police and develop much better, less-than-lethal response tools for them. Till then, get used to paying up cause we're all on the line when cops go over board.

They were the ones to jump out of a car and shoot though. And now we'll pay 6 million to the family. And everytime it comes down to these overzealous actions, we'll pay.

Similar events are common today. That's a big factor in the equation as to why nobody trusts the authorities and the criminal justice system is a cruel joke.

Sucks for the city of Cleveland. They should have told the family to pound sand.

Jumped out of the car and shot at the suspect that was indeed reaching for the weapon they had been advised that he had.

'Responsibility' sure is fluid.

That is really unnecessary and unproductive. The kid was 12 years old. Calling him stupid as you did is what is ridiculous. I played with toy guns all the time when I was a kid and no cops rolled up on me with guns blazing. Tamir Rice was not stupid, he was a child. The stupid ones were the police who drove right up on him and shot him at point blank range. And I say this as a defender of the police. They screwed up here and a 12 year old is dead because of thier 'stupidity.' Tamir Rice is the victim here. Blaming him or his family reflects poorly upon you and anyone else who does so.

Oh right, clearly he was going to shoot them to death with a toy gun.

Youve seen the gun. You would have known that were you the cops?

Of course you wouldnt. You would have responded the exact same way they did. No...wait...

you arent a cop....you just get to talk **** about what they SHOULD have done or what you WOULD have done.

What a country. Send your kid out in the streets with a gun to threaten people...hit the lottery.

The cops never saw the gun, so your point is utter nonsense.

Did you play with toy guns when you were 12?
Yep. So did my kids. However what i did not do was go to the park and intentionally menace strangers with a gun that had been modified to look real. I also didnt jump up when approached by cops and reach for said gun. See...had I done that, I'd probably have been shot.

Oh...and if my grandmother knew I was doing it? The cops wouldnt have been necessary. She would have resolved that probably when she first found out about it.

The childish connections you are trying to draw...its completely unrelated to THIS CASE. You get that...right?
