I agree with PeteEU, it's most likely a convenient distraction from the real woes of both the UK and especially Spain. Sadly, it's done poorly and will just add some fumes to the hate spewing rhetoric. A few nutters on the radical spectrum will fall for the rhetoric completely... maybe some anti-spanish violence from the brits and some anti-british violence from spanish extremists. that's as far as it will go.
I don't even think the far right loonies will get violent over Gibraltar

Depends on how much media it gets.. loonies tend to get violent over "media events capable" things, and the Rock aint one.. it has already pretty much died down... and this was off the comments of one man and was blown up by the British government and the media. Not seen much about it in Spain tbh, a few mentions sure, but wall to wall hourly coverage as in the UK media.. hardly. Maybe Andalublue has seen more than I have on Spanish TV, as I am not glued to it.
Nah, it's page 4 at best. CanalSur did a big report on it one day last week but it's hardly grabbing the headlines. Today's story was about a driver running over the foot of a Guardia on the border. It doesn't really have the sex appeal of a story about a royal pardon for a multiple paedophile.

I'm not even sure they know where it is to be fair.
Still stories on British news, and relatively nothing in the Spanish media... really funny how the two have handled this.
There are more interesting stories in the Spanish news at the moment. It's the silly season in the UK.
too be fair to the British press though its not like they made it up, if its silly season anywhere I would start with the source of the story.
We should do what Pakistan and India do and alleviate tensions with a friendly dance off on the border

Spain's Gibraltar Warning: Foreign Minister Jose Garcia-Margallo Says 'The Party Is Over'
Should be interesting to see how this plays out as I don't see us giving up Gibraltar whilst the local population want to remain under our sovereignty. 50 euro (£43.40) fee could be imposed on every vehicle entering or leaving the Rock through its border post with Spain and they are also talking about restricting air travel. Echo's Argentina's latest Falkland crusade which of course has been acting as an attempted distraction to their dire economic situation, also very similar to Franco's campaign bk in the 60's and 70's which was triggered for no particular reason. Honestly I think two can play this game and I wonder how the Costa Del Sol would fare if British tourists started boycotting, I also wonder if Spain will be giving up its claim to the canary islands.

here is the best part....whats that saying about people in glass houses?
Well then the UK and Cameron should not have escalated things by sending in military forces..
Plus the story is so minor in Spain that you have to actually search for it... it is a much bigger story in the UK, which is odd no?

Actually there are differences. Ceuta and Mellila. For example, who do you give it back too? Morocco did not exist when Spain got the areas from Portugal.
Not to mention that the people there would never want to be part of Morocco simply because Morocco is a 3rd world country vs Spain's 1st world status. With Gibraltar you have two 1st world countries so going from one to the other has minimal consequences.
And lets not forget... Ceuta and Mellila are official regions of Spain with all the privileges that entails. Gibraltar is a colony under the UK, and a massive tax haven. And it is especially the latter that will most likely assist Spain in its cause against the UK in the world opinion... tax havens are not exactly popular these days.
Spain says the situation with Ceuta and Melilla is completely different from that of Gibraltar.
Both territories are part of Spain itself, not a colony like Gibraltar. Both have been in Spanish hands since the 16th Century, centuries before the modern state of Morocco was born.
Spain claims them on historical grounds, for national security reasons and UN territorial integrity of the state principles. It stresses the majority of residents are Spanish
Spain retains five territories in north Africa - Ceuta, Melilla, Penon de Velez de la Gomera, Alhucemas and the Chafarinas Islands. Ceuta and Melilla are the most famous. Both are claimed by Morocco, which has compared the situation to Spain's claim to Gibraltar. Both territories are on the Moroccan coast. The population of both Ceuta and Melilla wish to remain Spanish.
Morocco argues that the UN principles of decolonisation must be applied; that Spanish military bases there threaten Moroccan security; and that the UN territorial integrity principles also apply.
But, despite the strong parallel, the UK doesn't bring up Ceuta and Melilla to reinforce the case for the continuation of the status quo for Gibraltar.
by esclating things you mean sending a warship which is routine in the region and pre-planned long before this issue?
This is a bigger issue in the British media because it directly affects British people but If its such a non issue in Spain why is Madrid beefing up broder controls and threatening to go the UN?
