Should there be a maximum voting age limit?

What is a good maximum voting age?

I don't think it's an age issue. My father was in a nursing home, had Alzheimer's, didn't recognize my sister or me but every election teams of Democrat thugs, usually women, arrived to coerce him into signing an absentee ballot. I do give them credit for not just signing it themselves. Some of you might remember the guy who was on the news proudly saying he'd voted for FDR again in 2008. Clearly, my father had no business voting and since we aren't Democrats, neither my sister nor I voted for him.

On the other hand, I had a friend in an assisted-living facility who was blind but sharp as a tack at 94. I could see no reason she shouldn't be voting. I'd trust her analysis of the issues more than most.

I also knew a man, my age, who was born with mental and physical disabilities. He could, and I suspect did, vote. He was in independent living being cared for by folks from welfare. He had an apartment in a building belonging to welfare and a case worker met with him two or three times a week to help him pay bills and work with any problems. I admire what they did for him but I'm sure he wanted to vote and I'm sure they "helped" him. Legally, he could vote.

In the Blue States where they're switching to all absentee ballots it will be a snap for caretakers to tell the elderly how to vote, for spouses to coerce their partners in voting. We saw the Democrats position on secret ballots with the Employee Free Choice Act, also known more accurately as the Card Check Act, which did away with secret ballots and replaced in with union thugs obtaining signatures on cards. Wouldn't that be wonderful for the general election and we could have much, much wider participation. Every precinct could have more people voting than are registered.

I live in Mexico and have talked with friends about voting. After 70+ years of total PRI domination they're very leery of fraud. One of the things they did was to get rid of absentee ballots. "They're made for fraud," was the summation of one friend. Another friend went to vote in the last election here and while she was there some young men carried in a chair with grandmomma in it so she could vote. The Mexican Embassies and consulates are voting stations so people working outside Mexico or travelling on business can vote there with the voter ID card.

Elections are on Sunday and voting stations are in every neighborhood. You have to present your voter card, which includes your photo, to vote. No card, no vote. The card is furnished free but you do have to go to a government office and get one. You know, hoops to jump through. It's terrible but people are proud of their voter ID card.

Another think I like about the system here and their attempt at honesty is that the voting stations aren't staffed with partisan volunteers. It's like jury duty in the U.S. except it's on a Sunday. Two elections ago a young friend of mine was tapped to work at the voting station in his neighborhood. He went to one or two evening classes to get trained in what he was to do. Then he showed up and worked for twelve hours. Since the voting station was in his neighborhood he knew almost all the voters who walked in and his mother brought his meals to the voting station.

One of our problems is that at least one party thrives of election fraud. Dead people voting, bogus people being registered so others can vote for them, people voting more than once in one election, foreign nationals being encouraged to vote, and thugs coercing the elderly to sign absentee ballots.

There is a major difference between the regressive, less educated, and less tolerant older generations, and the forward thinking, well informed, and socially tolerant younger generations in the United States.

Older people are far less likely to support basic rights such as the right for a woman to choose, the rights of LGBTQ couples to marry, or the right of people of color to peacefully protest the systematic racism in this country. Voters under 40 often tend to be far less bigoted, and believe in freedom for all citizens, not just white males.

Older voters are far more likely to support policies which will cause extreme harm to the environment, this country, and the world as a whole. Meanwhile, more educated younger voters often choose to implement policies which value the world we live in over the making of a quick buck or two, such as a ban on fracking, a ban on nuclear power, and a focus on renewable energy.

Older voters are far more likely to support imperialistic wars in Mideastern countries which pose no threat to the USA, as well as support the genocidal murder of Palestinian children by the illegal state of Israel. Younger voters understand the importance of peace in this world, and are far less likely to provoke a meaningless war overseas or support enemies of justice such as Israel, Turkey or Colombia.

In fact, an argument can be made that not having a maximum voting age kills 32,000 a year. Older white men make up the majority of gun owners in this country, and even as the rest of the country seeks to end meaningless violence such as the massacres in Orlando or Dallas, old white men who treat guns as more precious than the lives of innocent children are allowed to vote, and by voting, they stall any common sense gun reform that can be made in the usa. These geriatric republicans think that people need guns 'to defend" themselves, not knowing that having a gun makes it 50 times more likely for you to be shot, and that the vast majority of gun violence is committed by people who bought their guns legally.

I personally believe that a maximum voting age limit of 65 should be immediately implemented. This country is on the right path, and the older, less intelligent white men who hold this country back are slowly but surely dying out. However, progress needs to be made faster if the USA does not wish to be embroiled in new foreign wars, be known for its rampant homophobia and systematic racism, and lose 80 people a day to gun violence within the next ten or twenty years.

"More educated younger voters..." Like you?? Yeah, let's put the country in charge of 20-year-olds living in mom's basement playing video games all day. Sounds about right.

Where'd you dig this up, BS.com? This is the biggest nonsense I've every read. And a socialist shouldn't be worried about voting anyway. Using the Mao modeling, the Dear Leader should never need the vote of the common maggots anyway. So your whole premise is ridiculous.

Its the opposite side of the con in the other thread who wants to raise the age because the young are too "liberal". A lot of extreme individuals coming out of the wood work. Tis the season.
You are basically correct, though the OP's stance seems particularly transparent.

Neither are kosher, to me.

"More educated younger voters..." Like you?? Yeah, let's put the country in charge of 20-year-olds living in mom's basement playing video games all day. Sounds about right.
Kind of begs the question, which is more important? Younger voters with more "education", or older voters with more real life experience?

All you can really do is laugh at a post like this from a presumably young guy who has an avatar of Chairman Mao, who was still ruling China at age 82 and murdered 40 to 70 million along the way.

Ahh, the blind ignorance of youth.

No there shouldn't be a maximum age limit to vote.

That being said however, when someone of any age is not considered mentally capable to independently take care of them self (i.e. someone else has to sign legal paperwork for them as a guardian or such) at any age, they should not be allowed to vote since that would indicate the same situation legally as those under 18. The reasoning would be the same as that for not allowing under 18 to vote, not mature enough.

But but but... it was a glorious worker's paradise!

Or, was that the Holomodor under Stalin?

An interesting post.

So you advocate for what amounts to an intelligence test, or perhaps better stated, an ideology test.

Fortunately, people have history to refer to. Such history reveals regimes that required purity adoption in order to be allowed to live.

Considering the catastrophic impact these regimes inflicted on mankind, it's remarkable there are people willing to reveal they are of the same mindset.

So you want to restrict voting rights in order to reach your preferred outcome? Sorry that isn't the way in works in democratic society.

There should be no restriction on maximum voting age.

I think 80 should be the limit for serving as POTUS and driving a car/flying a plane.

Not sure about voting...I guess it is okay no matter how old you are.

But that is the way it works in a Democrat society.

But that is the way it works in a Democrat society.

I'm not sure I understand.

In purely democratic society, as in the ancient Greek city states, the will of the majority of the voters carries the day. In a (democratic) Constitutional Republic like the United States the will of the majority carries the day provided it doesn't conflict with the Constitution.

The OP wants his personal outcome to prevail and he wants to do it by keeping people who disagree with him from voting.

Maybe you should think a little more about democracy, citizens' rights and all that.

what a stupid rant and silly stereotypes. Its bannerrhoid movement nonsense. Most violent crime is caused by people under 30. Most illegitimate births are from mothers under the age of 25.

On the other hand, it is about what one would expect from a socialist or even from liberals and social democrats often enough.

No.

Sorry, but it was Democrat society and not a democratic society. I was making a comment on the Democrat Party's lack of commitment to democracy.

No vote
No age limit for voting
If a man suffers from - say - dementia and votes straight conservative ..as he is ordered by right wing radio .. too bad . Its NOT the voting age that is responsible , its the conservative extremist radio .. and little can be done about this as well .. Our world is far, far from perfect .

This should either be banned , or s/b in the CT area ..to me its too ugly!

Equally stupid examples , those my age will NOT be pregnant nor commit violence ..
We need the old fogies to act as a brake , a control of progressive ideas ..

The older generations "benefit" from the experience of growing up in a time of Jim Crow laws, homophobia, blatant misogyny, and extreme nationalism and a fear of anything declared "socialist" by Joe McCarthy.
I grew up during this era ... Obviously, all of these things were ''wrong''. Just as it is wrong to think that there should be controls on voting age ... or that only the young have the good ideas .. they do NOT .
