I've listed 30 sitcoms from the 1970's I got off the web and I would like you all to choose (in no particular order)the ones you feel are the 10 best of the bunch.

I don't want you to rank them from best to worse, because in a few weeks I'm going to count the votes each show got and narrow the field down. Once I do that, then I'll have you all rank them from best to worse.

I only saw All in the family and MASH. I liked both but I love MASH.

Here's my top 10:

MASH
All In
Sanford
Three's
Jeffersons
Good Times
Taxi
Welcome
Different
Happy Days

And an honorable mention to the intro song of Love American Style. I have no idea what the show was about or a single character but I remember that damn song, like The Loveboat song.

Happy days was a spin off of an episode of Love American Style... Or was it the other way around... lol

All In The Family

M.A.S.H.
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Taxi
Bob Newhart Show
Welcome Back Kotter
Soap
Odd Couple
Laverne & Shirley

Cool thread, Grim. Definitely my era of TV.

BTW, you only picked 9 shows.

You are correct. Happy Days was a spin off of a vignette of Love American Style. Lots of these shows were spinoffs of each other. Good Times was a spin off from Maude... which was a spin off from All in the Family. The Jeffersons was a spinoff of All in the Family, too. Laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy were both spin offs from Happy Days. Rhoda and Phyllis were spinoffs from The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Yup... I knew all of those. One thing that was strange though... On Maude, Florida's husband was named Henry Evans, but on Good Times his named magically changed to James.

I vaguely remember that; I rarely saw Maude, but was a big fan of Good Times.

Also, they re-did the ending of the Happy Days episode that spun off Mork and Mindy. The original showing did not have Robin Williams saying anything about going to Colorado... but the rerun did in order to "set-up" the new show.

The above were my favorites - I picked more than ten and I didn't put in order of preference.

I'm surprised you didn't put any of the weird ass kid shows that were prevalent during the 70s..... "Land of the Lost" - "H.R. Puffinstuff" - "New Zoo Revue" - "Sigmund the Sea Monster" ..... I think the Krofts were on drugs.. just sayin.

l dont remember those shows

but some good ones from 80 and 90's

charles in charge ,golden girls ,cosby show ,alf , full house

No Married with Children?

Mash, then.

Now that one I did NOT know... Interesting.

M.A.S.H.
All In The Family
Taxi
Bob Newhart Show
Night Court
Barney Miller
Mary Tyler Moore Show

I can only pick six from your list which rank as the better ones and the others do NOT belong in a class with them.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
MARY TYLER MOOR
MORK & MINDY
TAXI
BOB NEWHART
RHODA

I would add MARY HARTMAN MARY HARTMAN to that list as well as FERNWOOD TONIGHT which spun off from it.

I will go with:

1. All in the Family
2. M.A.S.H.

Or vice versa. I dunno.

You guys can pick 3 through 10 for me. I don't care.

I do think it's funny, however, that in the 70's we laughed and made fun of people like Archie Bunker. These days, FOXNews holds them up in the highest esteem. LOL!

All In The Family
Three's Company
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Taxi
Bob Newhart Show
Welcome Back Kotter
Barney Miller
Soap
WKRP in Cincinnati

Yes, I know it is only 9, but after eliminating those shows which did not really stand out with me this is what is left. Order is just what you listed, not in any kind of preference order.

In no particular order, and I'm reluctant to note M*A*S*H because I'm a huge fan of the film and there's no comparison to the sitcom. Robert Duvall was "Major Burns."

1. All In The Family

2. Happy Days

3. M.A.S.H.

4. Mary Tyler Moore Show

5. Taxi

6. Bob Newhart Show

7. Barney Miller

8. Rhoda

9. Odd Couple

10. WKRP in Cincinnati

The American shows I'm familiar with -

1 M.A.S.H.

2 Taxi

3 Soap

The best 6 1970's British shows I'm familiar with -

1 Fawlty Towers

2 Rising Damp

3 The rise & fall of Reginald Perrin

3 Some Mothers do ave 'em

5 Steptoe & Son (which gave birth to Sanford & Son)

6 Till Death to Us Part (which gave birth to All in the Family)

Would like to list Monty Python and Spike Milligan's Q series but these were comedy shows, not sitcoms.

Yes, Fawlty Towers. And the Carol Burnett Show as well as Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Only recognized about half of those

All in the Family
MASH
Sanford & Son
Good Times
Jeffersons
LaVerne & Shirley
Welcome Back Kotter
I Dream of Jeannie
Three's Company
Alice
