As I recall from several years ago, the idea of sanctuary cities was to allow illegals to be free to report crimes or be witnesses in trials without fear of being referred to the INS (now ICE) and picked up. It was the legitimate needs of local authorities being served, putting off immigration enforcement. It will be interesting to see if Trump’s ICE invades churches.

The name sanctuary comes from the old rules and customs that those fleeing the authorities, which often were not just, could find safety in churches. The old Hunchback of Notre Dame had Charles Laughton as Quasimodo save Esmeralda from her execution by carrying her off to the cathedral and telling “Sanctuary! Sanctuary.” That film has one of the great Hollywood endings: Quasimodo has seen the gal he saved happy together with her handsome lover as he sits high up in one of the towers, sad and alone. He says, looking at the gargoyles, “Why wasn’t I made of stone like these?” The camera pulls away from the cathedral and he disappears from view.

?? You probably meant to say "indentured servants" but perhaps weren't sufficiently educated to come up with the right word. That's OK. I can't always find the right word, either. As we all know, Trump loves the poorly educated. That's probably another reason why he's attacking Ivy League Universities - which is to say besides the fact that they refused him and his son admission. Also, his own "Trump University" was never accredited by anyone, for anything, other than FRAUD! - something Trump himself has always excelled at.

That's RIGHT! But it's still hard to imagine a more impotent response from you. Hey - here's an idea. How about YOU try answering the damn question yourself. If not itinerant migrants, WHO IS GOING TO PICK THE CROPS? And how much do you think Americans will be paying for strawberries under your plan? Or perhaps you think strawberries should only be consumed by the 1% ... maybe to have with their Champaign? Feel free to make that argument. I'm sure you've given this plenty of thought ... right? At least enough to have a workable plan.

I don’t understand the sentence above. The issue was to allow illegals to report crimes to local authorities without fear of federal authorities arresting them. Hence the prohibition on local officials notifying the immigration service.

Folks who report and/or witness crimes aren’t arrested or held in custody.

lets send back every illegal and keep a secured border - issue work permits, like a 3-6 months stay and no more with heavy fines for ovrerstaying, vetting and monitoring who's here and who isn't

if people will do McDonalds for $15 an hour, they'll pick crops for it too and, modern machinery is making picking crops much easier too, automation is a big part of the future

using slave labor shouldn't be accepted

Sorry, I believe you misunderstood. The issue was that local authorities would not notify the immigration service when if/when they discovered the person testifying or filing a police report was illegal.

I live in San Diego. That incident happened in the heart of a neighborhood. The owner of the restaurant is a local hero of sorts. There are a lot of people around most of the time. Coffee shop. Popular restaurants. A couple of bars. Word gets out. And people responded.

Do you have video evidence of wandering hordes of people gathered together to respond to an ICE raid?

Or are you just talking out the side of your neck?
