The peoples trust in our media to report the news fully, fairly and accurately has been declining a very long time. Trust in the media reached its high of 72% back in 1976. Since then it has been declining. Down into the 50's during Bill Clinton, down into the 40's for G.W. Bush and Obama to reaching its new low at the end of Obama of 32%. All of this pre-Trump. Our media has taken sides in our political battles which is why I think the distrust in it has been growing.

Almost all the media sides with the left, until the advent of cable news, this bias was mostly covert. With cable news it has become glaringly overt. This is shown in that 51% of Democrats trust the media compared to just 14% of Republicans. Independents come in at 30%, the non-affiliated, less to non-partisan, who also don't put much stock in our present day media to report the news fully, fairly and accurately.

Coincidences often happen. Also common are criminal conspiracy theories cooked up in paranoid minds. Rare, however, are actual criminal conspiracies brought to fruition.

The media is not the news. Breibart and Fox and Friends are not the news. Morning Joe is not the news. Most of what passes for news on tv and the Internet is commentary. I could be wrong but my impression of critics of the news who express opinions like the above post are people who seldom read the actual news, as in The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or New York Times. Even the nightly half hour news shows on the major networks are balanced in their thin reporting. The widespread impression of bias comes from conflating non-news that dominates the media with the actual journalism which provides us with real news if we bother to read it.

Mass media if you drop just below the first paragraph to the first graph, Gallup defines mass media as "Newspapers, TV, Radio when it comes to reporting the news fully, fairly and accurately." Gallup didn't include the internet in its survey.

Gallup didn’t but the average respondent who doesn’t read newspapers or listen to the radio for news probably had it in the back of her or his mind. And tv is as bad almost as the net. It would be surprising if even five percent of respondents were regular readers of daily morning newspapers.
