Man who tried to rob Waffle House with an AK-47 is shot by customer - Houston Chronicle

Pistol v "High Powered Killing Machine". Pistol wins.

Now, for my anti-carry/anti-ownership friends, the suspect had already left the store when the civilian engaged him. Was he still a threat?

From the link:

A handgun-licensed customer, whose wife was on her way to meet him at the restaurant, followed Cooper to the parking lot, fearing for his wife's safety, according to DeSoto police.

Police said the customer called to Cooper once they were outside. Cooper pointed the AK-47 in the customer's direction, prompting the customer to shoot Cooper several times, according to police in the southern Dallas suburb.

Since the (only?) shooter was not charged then it would appear so.

Good guy 1 / Bad guy 0 - handgun versus oh so scary "military style assault weapon." The so called MILITARY STYLE ASSAULT WEAPON didn't do well against a civilian with a civilian style little ole pistol. Imagine that. Sure doesn't fit the current narrative.

In Texas after dark, I think the civilian is on solid legal ground.

To me fear for his wife seems a reasonable justification to follow the guy out - I would have done the same thing. But unless the wife was there and he was heading for her he might be on sketchy ground with calling out to the guy.

Now imagine if niether had a gun in the first place ?
Even an idiot could assemble a functional gun in a few hours from plumbing parts.

A more likely scenario is that there would have been no attempted robbery in the first place
Are there no robberies in England, where guns are difficult to come by?

Didn't read the article? He had an explanation for that. Whether you buy it or not is up to you. Me? I don't really care. Being an armed robber is a risky profession.

Armed robberies are not a lucrative business. People who write bad checks, use stolen credit cards, or run casinos do much better. Armed robbers talk about "boosting" when they do robberies and it's the rush they get by making people do what they want. This guy didn't just rob the Waffle House but when through the place robbing patrons. My opinion he was "boosting" his self esteem.

Crime in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics

Improvements in recording of crime are thought to have particularly affected some categories of violent crime recorded by the police. There was a 27% rise in "violence against the person" offences (an additional 198,658 offences) which was largely driven by increases within the "violence without injury" subgroup (up by 143,239 offences; a 38% increase). The CSEW estimate for violent crime showed no statistically significant change compared with the previous year’s survey.

There were also increases in some of the lower volume but more serious types of police recorded violence, including an 11% rise in homicide (up 56 to 573 offences) and a 9% rise in offences involving knives or sharp instruments (up 2,425 to 28,008 offences). Regarding the latter, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that a tightening of recording procedures may be contributing to the increase in some forces.

It really saddens me that life is so disposable. The robber, if he needed money desperately, may have had better luck selling his weapon instead of robbing people at gun point. He took a calculated risk.
I understand that the customer was concerned about his wife, but he called out the robber instead of just observing the situation. In my opinion, that was a bad move. His wife was not threatened at that point.
But.....we don't know the entire story.

Just way too easy for the USA. We will just have to content ourselves with throwing in silly idea like that from the other side of the pond.

No. Not an idiot. You would need to be a decently intelligent person and not totally mad.

That generally puts the thing out of the reach of most who want to kill people.

My guess is that the citizen with the handgun had training, while the criminal just had a gun.
