I dealt with both types for years.

You omit, or chose to ignore, several very important points. Those Capital police knew that every single elected federal representative as well as the current VP and VP elect were in the chamber. They also knew there had been chants to kill Pence. They also knew that there had been considerable violence during the breach. What they did not know is if those smashing their way into the building were armed or not. They acted to protect those they took an oath to protect......as they should.

In my experience of years working on asylum claims, the former, who as I mentioned might be from Iran or Eastern Europe, often knew well what asylum is and that countries like the US might grant it. (See “Moscow on the Hudson,” a film where Robin Williams as the defector knows very well what to do.) The latter, on the other hand, might be Central American peasant-types simply running for their lives, clueless about political asylum. (See the more serious film, “El Norte,” about a Guatemalan brother and sister.)

Good points, but the main issue here, perhaps wrongly illustrated by critics showing pics of soldiers sleeping in the floor, was not accommodations for the troops, but the error of sending them at all without the norm of consulting with local officials. Cynics have suggested that this was a Trump “distraction move” to keep media attention away from his problematic policies.
