How the FDA lets chemicals pour into America's food supply

This is why this country is in a downward spiral. The same group that supports deregulation and cutting of government bitches and complains about deregulation and cutting of government. Guess which President these quotes from an article are referring to? I've taken the liberty of removing years and the Presidents name because for some people, when they read something that makes their guy look bad, their little brain misfires and they need to validate why it's a good thing.

Federal agencies under [redacted by me for mystery] have slowed down food safety enforcement across the board. In the first two-and-a-half years of the administration, the number of warning letters sent by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to companies dropped by about a third compared to the previous administration. Warning letters are one key tool used to prevent tainted items from entering the food supply. The number of letters sent from the FDA’s Food Safety & Applied Nutrition division dropped 37 percent.

In [Year redacted by me], the FDA denied a petition filed by environmental groups to ban perchlorate, a chemical that can be dangerous for children and developing fetuses, in food packaging, and it dismissed concerns from outside scientists about levels of toxic chemicals known as PFAS in food.

the FDA suspended routine inspections of both foreign and domestic food processing facilities, dairy farms, and animal feed processors. Meanwhile, the USDA indicated it would move to permanently raise poultry line-speed limits, a controversial move that poses potential dangers for workers as well as food-safety hazards. The USDA is also finalizing a rule that will privatize meat inspections for swine.

Oh, come on, you're totally off base here. What you ingest or do doesn't automatically have some clear-cut positive or negative effect that's the magical thinking right there! You're assuming everything's black and white, like eating kale makes you a saint and chugging soda makes you a villain. It's not that simple. The body's way more complicated than your cause-and-effect fantasy. And why do you think I'm promoting anything negative? I'm just calling it like I see it. What's your evidence that it's all so straightforward?

Calories in vs Calories out = weight, Healthy or obese.

Yes, OTHER factors matter. NONE matter as much as diet.

If you want to get into why American are worse at controlling those other factors as well, we can.

They are lazy, sedentary, feel good about being fat (because society tells us to make it so), we make shit for food, and call it nutrition. We don't exercise, and we stopped promoting PE in elementary schools to focus on the failing educational system,. Some lot of good that did us huh?

The very few that can't be controlled for, like genetics, can be significantly altered by (you guessed it) DIET.

We are fat, and obese as a nation because WE CHOSE IT, and others continue to excuse it

To use your analogy:

Cost benefit analysis for me: Better for you? Kale or Soda?

Now do that with EVERYTHING you chose to put in your body. It isn't the ONE thing, it's the sum total of ALL the things. Primarily DIET

Step ONE: Stop Choosing it, and others, STOP excusing it.

Nah, you're way off base. Calories in versus calories out isn't the holy grail you're making it out to be. Sure, it's a factor, but you're acting like diet's the only game in town. What about metabolism? Hormones? Stress? You're glossing over stuff that can totally screw up your neat little equation. And blaming Americans for being lazy and sedentary? That's a cop-out. The system's rigged processed garbage is cheap and everywhere, while healthy food's priced like it's a luxury. You think people are choosing obesity? Most don't have the time, money, or education to fight that battle every day. And kale versus soda? Cute, but it's not that simple. You're ignoring convenience, culture, and how addictive junk food is engineered to be. Sum total of choices? Half the time, people don't even get a real choice. You really think diet alone can override genetics that hard? Where's your proof? What's your take on how sleep or lack of it messes with hunger hormones? Bet you didn't even consider that.

You keep bringing up things that are relevant, at different points in our lives, which I have already admitted.

The fact though still remains that DIET is the single most important factor in a person's health.

What I am specifically not saying is that you can do away with all the other things that have relevance. BUT if you had to pick one, a single one, to change, DIET would/SHOULD be the one you focus on.

And yes, I feel like with most things in life. You choose your lot.

You can choose to eat well. It costs more, takes more time etc but it is still your choice whether it has that worth to you. American's are terrible at making those types of choices. They suck at delayed gratification, and they suck at taking responsibility for the choices they make.

There is plenty of research, and a lot of it boased, but if you truly want to find it, you will.

But I'll leave you with an example: If you ate an entire pizza (which isn't out of the realm) you would need to RUN A MARATHON (or equivalent) to offset/burn that caloric intake. How many marathon runners do we have among the people that are eating a pizza?

Nah, you're totally off base here. Diet isn't the single most important factor in health sleep trumps it every time. You can eat like a saint, but if you're pulling all-nighters or barely clocking five hours, your body's gonna tank faster than a crash diet. Studies like the ones you claim are out there show sleep deprivation messes with your metabolism, hormones, even your immune system. You're cherry-picking diet because it's the trendy thing to rant about. And this whole it's all about choice bit? Come on, that's oversimplified. Not everyone's got the luxury of time or money to cook kale smoothies life's not that fair. Plus, your pizza-marathon example's ridiculous. Who's running 26 miles after a meal? That's not how energy balance works in real life. What's your deal with obsessing over food anyway? You think sleep or stress don't screw people up just as bad?

What kind of question is that? People don't just eat whole, halves, or mostly pizzas like it's some universal rule. Everyone's chowing down however they feel like some scarf a whole pie, some split it, some pick at it. Your categories are nonsense; they don't even cover the chaos of how people actually eat. We feed this fake material that's sold as a milk substitute, not realizing it's just junk food in a bottle, then wonder why kids develop diabetes, obesity, numerous autoimmune diseases, allergies, and so much more.

One MAJOR problem with baby formulas is that in premature babies, it can cause a horrific (fatal or debilitating) disease caused necrotizing enterocolitis, in which the intestines die & have to be surgically removed.

The best thing to feed babies? What mother nature created over million of years: Breast milk. If a mom is having trouble producing breast milk, help is available with lactation consultants and there's also donor breast milk from other moms. When not possible or feasible for any reason (and there are many many reasons), we do need something better than this unusual concoction of chemicals.

In the midst of these stats, influencers accepting soda money to support status quo is demonic.

If we can’t agree to cut taxpayer subsidies for soda, what can we agree on?
