By now every driver knows the drill: The price of gasoline ratchets up, there's an outcry among motorists who feel gouged at the pump and then things settle down as the higher price becomes the new normal.Well, AAA has come up with a sobering statistic: the average price of gasoline will surpass $3 per gallon Tuesday for the 1,000th consecutive day. That's never happened before, the motoring organization says.

In case you're wondering, the current streak began on Dec. 23, 2010. Today, the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.52, according to AAA's daily price tracking service. That's a nickel a gallon less than the average so far this year. And unless there's another recession, AAA forecasts that a price floor of $3 a gallon is basically here to stay.

The magic number seemed to be about $3.80/gallon, at that point people started to change their driving habits. Much of the new normal is due to tax increases on motor fuel, as vehicle MPG rises, that revenue stream falls.

In fairness, gas prices soared during Bush's presidency and have been fairly level during Obama's. Throw in the fact Bush's ties with oil companies, and it's not hard to see why people would blame Bush.

I'm not saying it was Bush's fault. I think there were several factors which pushed gas prices higher and I'm not sure how much control a president really has over international oil prices. What I am saying is it makes much more sense to criticize Bush when gas prices rose over $3 a gallon (at its height) than it does to criticize Obama, who has seen gas prices remain roughly the same price throughout his presidency (excluding the time period when our country was reeling from the recession).

He has the power to put in measures that would lower gas prices, but stubbornly chooses not to. Why? Actually they do. Being one of the most populated countries and the largest customer for that commodity makes us, and the POTUS, the elephant in the room. The POTUS can, with a swipe of the pen release the gas and oil reserves. He/she can loosen or tighten regulatory enforcement upon the industry. Oil and gas leases and how they are maintained - the POTUS has great power here.

our energy model is almost as dumb as our health care model. if we don't replace it soon, the wars that our kids will have to fight for access to diminishing resources will become more and more catastrophic. as a side benefit, the actions we take will lead to more terror funded by oil. meanwhile, casino gambling on the price will continue to pull billions out of the economy that could be spent elsewhere, and everyone suffers.

i like my gasoline powered vehicles, too, but this is a one hundred year old technology, and the costs aren't just the retail price. we can do better.
