Principles are a wonderful thing to uphold as long as the martyr is willing to die on a hill for those principles. Sort of like a Hamas fighter deciding he can take on a squad of IDF soldiers in a firefight.
Fortunately, no public school teacher is a slave to a particular job in a public school. How many school districts are willing to hire a teacher who knowingly defied a state law?
Hopefully one less bad teacher who doesn't believe the law and the rules apply to them.Well, one less teacher.
It's the MAGA dream.
because the parent aren't any of that. my parents didn't support me all the time. But there's an easy fix - notify them of their kids behaviorsWhy is that not being said to the state or to parents who are complete idiots, abusive, unsupportive?
That has nothing to do with what we're talking about.because the parent aren't any of that. my parents didn't support me all the time. But there's an easy fix - notify them of their kids behaviors
nicknames are not the same as gender based pronouns. My parents weren't worried about "supporting" me except financially. That has nothing to do with what we're talking about.
Parents are those things, at least in some ways, if they don't support their kids in at least something as small as a name they prefer, regardless of what that name is.
Do you think a boy named Elizabeth should have to get their parent's permission to use a different name, go by even just their middle name or a nickname? Afterall, the parents gave that boy that first name to begin with so many want them to use that name.
So wait.
Littly Billy now has to be called "William" or the teacher gets shitcanned?
Because that's what the law says.
They are on the same level. It is still a benign choice that doesn't truly affect anyone else except the person asking for that, and not in any sort of way that causes harm. You keep attempting to make excuses for why this similar to something you experienced, when it isn't.nicknames are not the same as gender based pronouns. My parents weren't worried about "supporting" me except financially.
They wanted me to finish school and get a job so I could support myself. They simply didn't care about anything else except when i got in trouble with cops. etc..then they punished me. Sometimes I learned sometimes i was a jerk. Self esteem is earned - not doled out
It's basically a Jim Crow starter kit, only targeting LGBT.They are on the same level. This bill covers exactly what I asked about when it comes to a boy named Elizabeth. You ignore that. We are talking a cisgender boy wanting to go by a different name and not being allowed by his parents to do so. Do you agree with the law?
Self esteem isn't "earned". It is part of the experiences we have, who we have around us.
Horseshit. Self esteem is a product of multiple factors.nicknames are not the same as gender based pronouns. My parents weren't worried about "supporting" me except financially.

Awww. Such a positive sentiment for a teacher who defied the law and lost her job.I suppose since we all have to compromise our principles from time to time, which is degrading, we resent it when someone else says 'no.'
Risking the job to help a kid who is in a high suicide demographic is a badge of honor for a teacher.
She'd be snapped up somewhere else.
you have no idea how it effects children long term. I'm not involved enough to generate stats. but the regret for being a transsexual is deep and life altering. I refer to various interviews with trans who are regretful or reversing it.They are on the same level. Nick names arent pronoun. pronouns carry gender ID as us old folks are always old. But i reserve that distinction for speaking to adults (primarily at work) who deserve that business courtesy. I am not beholden when speaking to a boy saying his name is Sue (Johnny Cash)This bill covers exactly what I asked about when it comes to a boy named Elizabeth. You ignore that. One has to incorporate positive personality traits. To build self esteemSelf esteem isn't "earned". It is part of the experiences we have, who we have around us.
What if the kid's name really IS Sue?I am not beholden when speaking to a boy saying his name is Sue (Johnny Cash)
When fallout comes from teachers using (or refusing to use) students' preferred names
Backlash has erupted after Florida district fired a high school teacher who used student's preferred name without the parents' explicit permission.www.usatoday.com
A teacher trying to connect with her student. How terrible.
There's a lot of support for her from her students at least.
Yes we do. When they are free to change their name and/or pronouns as they want, there is no reason to believe there would be any negative outcome. You don't get to simply claim something will cause harm without evidence.you have no idea how it effects children long term. Parents don't need to express support for something minors really don't completely understand how life altering their decision is
Which is why Parental Authority has to be the bottom line for decision making/authority of trans hormone/surgery

The law is the only thing making this political. The teacher is just showing respect for the student.A teacher is supposed to teach... not make political statements.

If any poster repeats that name, the Administration might come in and deport that poster. And shave their head on national TV.What was the preferred Name?
been over this again and again. some posters need the last word..just an observation -not a personal attack -but continuing this is pointlessYes we do. When they are free to change their name and/or pronouns as they want, there is no reason to believe there would be any negative outcome. There is little regret for even transitioning medically, less than 5percent. There is more regret for most other medical procedures. But reversing use of pronouns or a name is quite easy, just use the other.
It isn't the parents' life.
And you keep trying to misrepresent this situation. It isn't just names that are involved here, but all of it is freedom of speech. What if his name is Sue or Elizabeth? Why do you feel you get to change it?
The law is pointless and cruel. You just don't like the facts. You deflect and refuse to recognize the law as it is written, instead trying to make excuses for it.been over this again and again. some posters need the last word..just an observation -not a personal attack -but continuing this is pointless
Unless it was a curse word, I don't think it matters honestly. What was the preferred Name?
I just thought about how with my two sons, one we have been using a common nickname for him since birth, with his dad using a less common nickname as well. The other, his dad is the only one in the family who uses a common nickname for him rather than his full first name (generally because I'm not comfortable calling him by my dad's name). He'll answer to either his full first name or his nickname. But I found out while volunteering at his school a few times that some of his teachers and classmates call him by his initials. I think its because he introduces himself to everyone using his first and last name. I'm fine with that and see it as one of the few things he can choose for himself, agree to for himself without needing our approval. He shouldn't need our permission for something like that at all. Just like the other son shouldn't need our permission to go by some other name, including if he wanted to his preferred online handle.Whats with your full-on MAGA hatred of transgenders? Very weird.
This should be obvious:
"It’s culturally responsive teaching.
This kind of instruction incorporates students’ cultural experiences, languages and identities into the learning process. Using students’ cultures can make lessons more relevant and engaging, education researchers have found.
...Caitlin Thomas, KIPP’s math director, said that care and trust makes students more comfortable with making mistakes. They trust the teacher to lead them to success, she said."

The law is the only thing making this political. The teacher is just showing respect for the student.
It should be up to the kid first, unless it would be harmful, like clearly someone trying to tease a kid and they don't see it. Then you should discuss it. But if a kid wants something else that their parents don't want them called, the kid's decision, particularly a teen's should take precedent. We don't have laws about it but if a parent tells the school what name to call their kid that is the name we call the kid.
