sight seeing was equally nice. I was on a gatorfreighter. 300 marines on the flight deck excersizing, cleaning their weapons (ha, no pun intended), and sunning themselves. I look back on those days ever so fondly.

I scored high enough on my asvab to go into nukes but the "need of the Navy" required that inductees to the nuke program be younger. That's a lot of money to spend on someone who didn't have as many years ahead of them to put back into the Navy. Or, at least, that is what they told me.

So, I went into the second highest rate instead. Fire Control. But I was a military evaluator for nukes, FC's and ET's at B.E.E. Ibefore I ended up instructing week 15 at A school for F.C.A. (solder and de-solder....booooooring.....)

I ended up pushing booters my last 18 mos. at Great Mistakes. I had the "Triple Threat" unit and we actually got the "Hall of Fame" flag my last push through.

I was also stationed at Norfolk. I served on the Saratoga.

Off topic.......sorry. My bad.

HAHAHAHA.. "second highest rate. Fire Control" that is too much.. ET wannabees is all FC's were. :rofl I don't know how many FC's I had to tutor just so that they could make it through B.E.E.. When where you in?

Jallman~
Yeah, I heard about the P-Eyes finally closing. I shed a tear. I practically lost my virginity in that place. It was devastating. (ok, that was my OGT moment.)

Spoken like a true sailor! Hey, I've had cooks and snipes tell me their rate was the highest amongst the enlisted. We all should feel that way, no? Navy pride! Truth is, it took us all to do the job and one without the other wasn't important at all.

However in B.E.E., I had to push my ET's thru 34 mods and FC's did only have to go through 25 I think. Then it was off to A school for them.

I had the misfortune of actually marrying an ET. She did give me two great sons though. I tutored her all the way before she finally roc'd out. I don't know how that loony beotch got into ET to begin with..... But alas, I knocked her up and she got out of the Navy to devote her attentions to making me misrable full time..

I went in in 81 and got out in 88. Pride aside, back then, nukes were considered the highest and FC and ET was considered to be about a horse a piece. Of course, FC's thought they were the shiznet and so did the ET's. Our BEQ's were nicer though...hahahahaha!!! But you guys did have more babes. I'll give ya that. Only men were allowed to be FC's back then.

But being an FC was awesome. I worked on the C.I.W.S. (Phalynx) and the Tomahawk when I wasn't instructing, pushing booters or waxing and buffing the deck.:rofl

ET wannabees is all FC's were

OUCH!!!!

Do you have any idea what a nuke's signing bonus was for re enlistment after your first term? It was phenomenal and, needless to say, lured me right in. :rofl

Hehehe.. some of my closest friends in the navy were FC's .. I got to help work on the R2D2 too.. that was an amazing piece of machinery!! Our division head thought it would be a good idea to have the FC's and ET's train eachother on their respective equipment. I was never able to get an FC to understand a radio.
ET stands for "Extra Testicle" or "Everything Technician". LoL
I was in from '91 to '94. Got the lovely pleasure of catching the tail end of Desert Storm. Let me tell you, that was a fun experience.

I dunno about ET's but FC's SRB's were at 37,000 for a 6 y/o re-up back in the early eighties.

The problem with the SRB's...it was a recruiter's line of BS. They would tell you about the SRB amount but that amount was the real time amount. There was no guarantee that in 4 or 6 yeras there would be an SRB at all.

When I went in, FC's were at 84% manned so the SRB was attractive. When I got out FC's were 103% manned and there were no SRB's whatsoever. In short, "My recruiter lied." (Sound familiar)

That is the main reason I left. I can hear Commander Clark like it was yesterday. When it was time to re-up, the SRB's were gone but I was still undecided what to do. He told me, "Listen here PARDNER (I was from Texas and he was razzing me) either you are Navy or you are not. If you are, the SRB don't mean nothin'. If you ain't, get the f*** outta my Navy."

I said "Aye, sir!" I then headed straight over to PSD to begin my exit process.

In 1996 the SRB for an FC was 58K. Now whether it would have stayed that way time I had to re-up is a different story. And yes, recruiters lie like hell, but thats a given. I think if colleges have to allow recruiters, then the recruiters should be held to a higher standard of truthfulness when dealing with potential recruits. But we are getting way off topic with all that.

Very True....lol...;)

OK...I have a general question for the gay contingency here...

This is a very legitimate question...

What's "gay"?

I'm talking in terms of items...For the straight people, pink is gay...leg warmers are gay...Volkswagons are gay(and/or activist college kids)...

Are there items that the gay culture sees as "symbols" of gayness?...

The problem is that those items you have listed are not so much "gay" as what has become the term for "stupid" or "out of style."

"Gay" in all reality originally meant "happy."
"Gay" then changed to mean "homosexual."
Now don't ask me for the low down on when that occurred because it would take way too much time. Just know that "gay" and BEING GAY are two different things.
Usage of the word "gay" as a replacement for pages of alternate words found in any thesaurus, is just sad.
I find it, if not much else, to be most offensive if only because it shows the deterioration of the English language.

Not really, sorry for that. It wasn't missed but the point of it did get lost. I apologize.

Yes, there are symbols which mean "gay" or "homosexual" to the GLBT community;

Pink triangles
Rainbow flag
Rainbow colors items
and in some circles...colored bandanas

Are rainbow stickers on cars a sign the person is gay?

So you would prefer the language to remain static? Do you use the "original"
meanings of words? For example, do you use "girl" to mean "a child of
either sex"? I observe that you do not seem to mind using other modern
inventions or meanings: "low down", "homosexual", "way".

I dislike the horrors that appear because of ignorance, such as "off of", or
"bacteria" being used as a singlular, or "less" being used to mean "fewer", but I
know that language is a living thing and does not always change for reasons
that I might think are good.

There are only stereotypes. I know straight men who are incredibly camp and
out gay men who are anything but camp; you can deduce nothing from the
things they like or use. A thing only becomes gay when someone dislikes it and
wants to add a pejorative.

I just looked up the word bacteria, and found that it indeed is the plural of the word "bacterium." I have learned something today.

but how often is it necessary to talk about a single bacterium?

It is necessary surprisingly often, especially when talking about a type of
bacterium. You probably don't notice it because of the common misuse of the
plural. Don't forget, very few people pay much attention to the way they say
something; they are more concerned, perhaps reasonably, with what they are
saying.

It is required in common utterances such as: "We need to protect people
against this very dangerous bacteria", or "A single bacteria can develop into
millions in a very short time".
