Just a little thing in the news here in Washington state. They have an initiative on the ballots to allow hard liquor to be sold in grocery stores and minimarts. Currently you can only buy it at state liquor store.

There has been a campaign against this initiative with tv commercials showing firemen talking about how it would increase drunk driving accidents.

When with a little research you find the most popular drink of a drunk driver in a fatality was beer not hard liquor. If they were truly against drunk drivers perhaps they should be after beer suppliers or better yet make it a one strike your out with a DUI and lose your license for life. But there is such a use of having firemen on tv commericals to sway the public. But not to be outdone the proponents have policemen. lol
I just get tired of using the firemen on all these commercials to try and persuade you.

FYI. Do you know that New Years Eve does not have the most drunk driving accidents? Researching into drunk driving I found out that it is Thanksgiving. Did not know that but makes sense when you consider almost everyone celebrates Thanksgiving but not everyone goes to New Years Eve Party.

Firemen's argument doesn't hold water. Ha! Where one purchases one's liquor does not effect how many people drive drunk.

Unless it's a drive-thru, of course.

Living in free society does not come without risk, perhaps our government should quit attempting to criminalize everything under the sun in the name of keeping us safe. Eventually we will all be safe because everyone of us will be locked up or have lost most of our freedoms...sigh? Then we will have to worry about our own government in regards to our security...not sayin..just sayin.

I would bet that firemen are deemed the most trustworthy people in society.

I read once July 4th, but I knew it wasn't New Year's Eve.

Bah, husby and I buy all our booze at the local RiteAid and CVS drug stores. They have monthly sales that are great! :D

Doesn't affect our rates here. In La. we do have drive through liquor sales, you can buy liquor interchangeably in a supermarket, convenience store, drive-thru, or specialty liquor store and most of our OWI's come from bar sales and sporting events.

There was study done a while back that stated every single one of us commits at,least one daily minor misdemeanor or minor felony due to the sheer number of laws on the books.

OMGZ! Adults are gonna be able to buy Liquor down at the grocery stores with their beer and wine? The horror of it is just too much:roll::2razz:

I never understood the logic behind selling beer and wine in a grocery store, and not liquor. Makes no sense to me.

You can get drunk off beer or wine just as easily as liquor, all you have to do is drink more. I'm pretty sure beer is the most common DUI beverage anyway.

Whoever said the state doesn't want to lose their monopoly is probably right.

MADD started off with good intentions, but has turned into a retarded scarism org.

2-3 beers in one to two hours alone is enough for most people to get a DUI in this country.

I don't see limiting venues for purchasing alcohol as a legitimate way to prevent drunk driving. There's nothing stopping someone from stopping at a liquor store after getting their groceries. Allowing the sale of liquor at grocery stores will simply be convenient for people who drink liquor.

If you want to stop drunk driving, you have to educate the public about the dangers of drunk driving, and create harsh punishment for drunk driving to create artificial disincentive. How many people would drive drunk if they new a DUI charge could mean permanent loss of the privilege of a driver's license? I'm not honestly advocating that, but harsher punishments for DUI/DWI might get people to seriously think about using a designated driver.

The general rule now is one beer per hour and you are safe. Personally? I can drink more than one beer and be fine but would still blow over. I understand the laws and why though. I would rather get my drink on at home anyways:)

As a result of these organizations such as MADD etc. , along with the ATA, DOT and state authorities, these entities have discovered a cash cow and will be hard pressed to ease up on it. Criminalizing our own citizens has become a state sanctioned business for profit both by public entities and private, and this country has geared academia for this as well.

I think you could insert any organization in place of MADD and that statement would be true. All groups start with noble intentions but the overzealous morons rise faster than scum on the pond.

Same here. Drive-thru liquor sales probably have no significant effect one way or another, but... it does look funny.
An added bonus is it pisses MADD off. Anything that gives them fits is okay with me.

I read an article a while back saying that Burger King was gonna start serving beer in some places and wondered if you could order it via the drive thru:shock:

LOL..and have a 16 year old serve it up after a taste test.

On a related note, things to avoid saying while drunk driving at a traffic stop:
-Po noccifer, I wazhn't zrinking at all.
-Can we hurry this up, I'm starting to lose my buzz
-Thank God you stopped me! I coulda killed somebody
-Hell, I couldn't do that sober.
-Where do you THINK I'm coming from at this hour?

If anything, it should be the opposite, few people will swig out of a bottle of spirits on their way home compared to beer or wine.

If someones gonna drink and drive, they're gonna drink and drive. If you're of age you have complete access to alcohol, really doesn't matter what venue you buy it at :shrug except a drive thru of course (good one Maggie).
