  • a 22 is a good pistol to learn on. its cheaper to shoot, won't cause a flinch and is easy to control. The main reason I recommend against one for self defense is reliability. I shoot in a steel league all summer long. there is a 22 rimfire division and I constantly see really good shooters using good quality 22 ammo having their guns fail to fire. Something you cannot afford in a gun fight. However, if you buy top quality 22-which is going to be 8-10 bucks a box like CCI Mini mags the reliability issue diminishes. and yes, you won't get over penetration with a 22 but your accuracy is going to have to be really high since often the only sure stop with a 22 is in the face. but if you learn to shoot one well, that's better than missing with a 9mm or 380.
