Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is recovering in a wheelchair from a recent bicycling accident, calling the ordeal “very painful.”

In her first public appearance since the accident, DeVos said today that she broke her pelvis and hip socket. She underwent surgery earlier this month.

Fragile bones can result from a number of factors, including poor dietary intake of vitamin D & calcium as well as post-menopausal osteoporosis.

Well, that's pretty awful. I hope that they are able to repair the injuries so she can walk again soon. Losing my mobility is one of my big fears.

I'm sorry to hear she injured herself and I wish her a full recovery, but I'm equally sorry that the injury won't keep her from returning to the DoEd. I don't wish folks ill, but I'm not above being thankful for certain consequences of fate.

I fell on my front porch & shattered my left femur, which had to be operated on (ORIF) to replace it with a stainless steel rod. It took me 3 1/2 weeks in a rehab facility to learn how to walk again - with a walker. Three years later & I don't even have a limp

Thanks. The really astonishing thing is throughout the entire fall, calling my neighbor for help & seeing the ambulance pull up to take me to the ER I didn't feel any pain. Unfortunately for DeVos, that seems not to be the case for her.

My wife gave me a Lively Alert medical alert device that I wear around my neck & charge up once a day. It's basically a cell phone in miniature with a fall detector. You fall, they call you. We live in what is known as a 'small cell' where the nearest cellular site is mounted on a utility pole only a hundred yards away. Away from home, it acts as a regular cell phone so they can fix your location by triangulating your position with respect for the nearest cell sites. Pretty neat.

I join other members & guests in wishing Secretary DeVos a complete recovery.

She is doing an excellent job, so I hope that she returns to work as soon as possible.

I broke my hip in 2016, so I know how demoralizing it is to temporarily lose the ability to walk.

I broke mine in the same motorcycle accident that left me with this TBI. The hip surgery was a huge help and healed in about a year. The TBI on the other hand is a little slower. I did regain my speech and the stutter is gone, but I still have a hard time with some cognitive issues, and my memory is shot. On a good note, I am back to riding again.

Mine was 2016 as well! Bad year for hips, although it was broke the first time in 1977, in another bike wreck. In '77 it was a Triumph, 2016 was my Harley.:(

My grandma had a fractured hip once. It didn't go straight through the hip. They couldn't tell how far it went because.....

...and here's one of those things that always amazed me about her...

....she only found out after walking it off. Yes. She lived with us for a few years before another one of our moves (she went to a home after that, minimal assisted living). She'd walk several miles to a grocery store, and several miles back. She refused my dad's offer to drive her. She was bothered by hip pain for a while. Also, by the by, she had previously torn her rotator cuffs several months before (I think). At some point, she slipped in the shower, banged her hip, and didn't tell anyone. She kept doing everything normally. Because it wasn't a complete fracture from one surface to the other, she could force her legs to move. It wasn't deep enough to cause the strain to complete the fracture. When she finally mentioned hip pain to the doctor and the fall, they x-ray'd her. It had healed, but it had definitely been broken.

Even if you think it was foolish of her, you have to admit: that was strength. Tougher than nails.

Story time complete.
