A contingent of liberal Democrats in Congress is proposing a new federal gun control idea: mandatory liability insurance for gun owners.
When New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney introduced the legislation last month with eight other Democrats, she boasted that it is “the first bill to require liability insurance of gun buyers nationwide.”
Democrats propose $10,000 fine for gun owners who don't have insurance | The Daily Caller
The anti-gunners have gone crazy. This won't get far, because the Surpreme Court has already ruled that Congress can't mandate the purchase of a product.
“For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence,” Maloney said as she introduced the legislation. “My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons.”
Exceptions would be made for law enforcement, military and employees of government departments and agencies.

But its a tax.
Really? Won't John Roberts simply call it a "tax"?
Of course, law enforcement and government officials are exempt.
Not everyone would have to buy it, so it's a not mandated purchase. The anti-gunners have gone crazy. This won't get far, because the Surpreme Court has already ruled that Congress can't mandate the purchase of a product.
How will they enforce such a law without some kind of registry of gun owners?
I don't own a gun. No need for me to buy insurance.
Same as car insurance I would imagine. You have to show proof of insurance when you register the car (buy the gun) and if you're ever caught without the insurance you get fined - just like they check for carry permits if they find someone carrying. :shrug:How will they enforce such a law without some kind of registry of gun owners?

Regardless of that it shouldn't be up to Congress - it should be left with the states.

I'm curious - do insurance companies actually offer such insurance policies now? Can you buy liability insurance for your kid's bat, just in case someone steals it and bangs a few heads?

People drive around all the time without car insurance. When they get caught they pay the fine. :shrug:What are you registering your car to?
What if I bought a gun in the past? Not that I have, mind you, just in the circumstance that somebody had done so.
