I'm eager to learn the correct names of "stuff" and hope other DPers will teach me some of the correct terms for "dealiebobbers."

I'll begin:

tang--the center "pole" of a metal vegetable peeler. From Dictionary.com:

"a long and slender projecting strip, tongue, or prong forming part of an object, as a chisel, file, or knife, and serving as a means of attachment for another part, as a handle or stock."

Really, you start the thread with the word "tang"? Not me.

The correct name for a whatchamacallit is thingamabob, everyone knows that. ;)

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways? There seems to be no correct term for many things. ;)

The Urban Dictionary has a different definition. I'll let those who are interested look it up themselves.

That's true, but you could mix the whatchamacallit and a thingamabob and make a doohickey.

aglet--tip of a shoelace

eyelet--holes you thread laces through

why does hawaii have an INTERstate highway?

The thingy that holds a gun is a holster.

The dingus that holds a knife is a sheath.

The whatsis that holds a sword is a scabbard.

thought I'd throw that in, since I hear people mix them up all the time. Actually "sheath" is acceptable for a sword as well, but "scabbard" is better.

while we're here, a shoulder belt that supports a sword is called a Baldric. The groove on the blade is a fuller. The crossguard is also known as quillions. The part you hold in your hand is the hilt, not the "handle".

A gun's "handle" is properly called it's "grip". If you have a knife with wooden sides attached to the tang (see above) at the hilt, those are called "scales".

A screwdriver with a straight singular edge at the tip is known as a regular or slotted screwdriver. A screwdriver with the four grooves on the tip is a Phillips' head, for use on screws with a cross-like slot.

That strip of metal you check your oil with is called a dipstick. :)

The thingus on your car you put water or coolant in? That's the radiator. The spinny part connected to the fanbelt that makes electricity is called an Alternator.

bunghole--the hole in a container or cask through which liquid is poured; also the the hole plugged by the center lid of the lid of a blender.

Twit -- pregnant goldfish

:lamo: ..

Bodkin - An oversized needle with a blunt end and a large eye, used in sewing to pull a long string of cording or ribbon through a channel in a garment, such as at the waist in shorts or slacks, or the neckline in a shirt, to enable the wearer to adjust the fit. The bodkin enters and leaves the channel at the same point, and the cording ends are then tied together in a bow. A large safety pin can be used as a substitute.

Interesting. Bodkin also means dagger, in some obscure dialect I can't recall. It also refers to a type of arrow point made to pierce armor.
