College Pitcher Hits 103 MPH is Due to Break MLB Bank

What'll be interesting to see is when he is drafted (probably by DC at #1), what kind of offer he accepts. I imagine he's going to be a Bora's client, and in this economy I wonder if a team will agree to a multi-million $ signing bonus or if he'll hold out for greener pastures, which is all too common. Especially a team like the nats, which is one of those teams that's not known for big contracts, to say the least.

Anyway, the kid looks amazing. With that kind of control, he probably won't need much time in the farm system.

Update: He's looking for $50m.

That $50 million figure that's being attached to ballyhooed college-pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg is no joke. Baseball people who have spoken to Strasburg's adviser Scott Boras say they believe that's the figure Boras has in mind for Strasburg, the San Diego State pitcher some are calling a once-in-a-decade talent.

Whether Boras is naming the figure or just dropping hints isn't known. What is known is that big-league execs are bracing for the $50 million bomb to be dropped come June's amateur draft.

Boras isn't speaking about this publicly. But in discussions with other baseball people, he's saying quite a bit apparently. One club executive said Boras has found at least one comparable hurler for the right-hander Strasburg, who is said to have clocked between 100 and 103 mph 14 times in one recent game.

That's a lot of zeroes, and unlike football if a player gets hurt on the field or just fizzles out the team has to eat almost all of it.

Then again, to pass him up and see him go have a torrid career with another team could haunt the franchise for a long time...

lol boras

$50m for ANY college player is absolutely insane.

103mph is great and his control looks good, but he's pitching against college players in the Mountain West Conference. That's light years below single A, which is light years below double A...etc.

Kyle ****ing Farnsworth can hit 101 on the radar gun and I would have traded him away for a nice bag of balls.

He could be amazing, but there are so many risk factors.

Yeah, true, but that's a long way from what the Nats are going to be able to offer...it might just be a sign that they're going to hold out for a big spending team to take the gamble.

If NYY was willing to offer Kevin Brown (:rofl) what they did, who wouldn't hold out LoL? They're going to need more pitching when Joba and Hughes underwhelm people, and maybe CC will have a down year like almost every other pitcher who signs a mega-deal. Or at least, I hope so.

Joba will have 125+ innings with an era of under 3 this year. He's legit.
Hughes has "underwhelmed" before, but he's only 22 years old. He's got plenty of time.
CC....eh. I'm not sold.

CC's a horse, but he got ridden hard and put away wet last year by the Brewers. The guy'll probably have an off-year, but it will be because he pitched 253 inning with 10 complete games (6 after the allstar break, with another one the day before the break) not because he signed the big contract.

Farnsworthless, Jeez! That's a name I don't ever want to see in pinstripes again. Forget the bag&balls, I'dve traded him for just the bag.

I'd rather face a guy who throws a 103 MPH 4 seam fastball than a guy who throws a 93 MPH 2 seamer, and mixes in 84 MPH sliders and 79 MPH change ups.

No doubt, it's much more difficult to establish a rhythm against a guy like that.

Depends on whether he has a 90mpg change up and a 90mph + slider with Kerry Wood movement.
