Depends.
Everyone is agnostic to a degree, I would agree with that.
But people use it as a fence-sitting position more than anything, so as not to offend. There is something to say for that, I suppose.
My experience with most atheists is that they almost believe that they themselves are God-like. There's a condescension about them toward everyone, as if they operate on a higher plane then the rest of us. And the thought of a being above them is almost insulting to them.
Bill Maher is a prime example. He talks down to everyone. He sees himself as superior to the rest of us.

It's not a religion but I do agree with you that atheism does involve a form of faith, because there is no way to know that God doesn't exist. Religious people, and atheist have the same type of mindset IMO, they just believe different things. Agnostics are the ones to claim that we don't know.
Apdst. You've said some stupid things at DP. But this is the stupidest. As a Jew, I can tell you quite unequivocally that Judaism is a religion, not a race. A race would denote some genetic similarities. There are NONE that are common to all Jews. Many Jews share a common ethnicity and culture, but remember The only people who thought that Judaism was a race were the Nazis. If I thought you were actually making a claim in that vein, I'd nail you for a Hate Speech violation.
Educate yourself instead of saying stupid things that are completely inaccurate. Judaism is a religion and mostly an ethnicity, NOT a race.
You serious?
There are those atheists who go beyond this, and have an actual faith that their is a god, and preach it high and wide. I think of that type as religious atheists.
I always felt agnostics were kinda the real cowards. The religious folks embrace it, the atheist embrace it and the agnostics can't make a decision!
Now hun, I was a bit tongue in cheek there, sorry if that didn't quite come across that way.
Judaism is definitely a religion... and it's also an ethnicity. There is a common ancestry from ancient people... My boyfriend is Jewish, but he is Mizrahi so he looks middle eastern. I don't think he looks Arab though. He looks different than Arabs, but he still looks like he is from the middle east... His family was in Egypt for a long time (you know, the Exodus and all that), but he still knows which son of Jacob his family is from (12 Tribes of Israel). German Jews are usually Ashkenazi, then you have all kinds of ethnic groups within the Hebrew people, but they probably look more diverse today because they lived and reproduced with people in Europe, southern Europe, Asia, etc. However, they carry a common genome. I believe it's known as "J" and I know it's been mapped, when scientists mapped the human genome (I am a geek).
I also know that Jewish people practice the religion differently and have different customs depending if they are Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, etc.
But I still think his comment was stupid... it is a religion and when you talk about race and ethnicity, it does get muddled and a little hard to understand.. maybe subjective, but I think genes and genetic disposition are not subjective. If the genome can be traced, and the blood can be tested for it (no matter what color your skin is) then it's an ethnic group by some definition...
Scumbag alert, divide and conquer CIA cointelpro tactic ...Maher come on homey!
Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspires terrorism
"On Friday, Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Maher told Ellison, who is a Muslim, that the Quran was a “hate-filled holy book” that inspired terrorism."

Maher is a anti-religious bigot. He is one of those liberals that probably runs around saying we must be tolerant and be accepting of others when it comes to gays/trannys but probably turns around and bashes religion like a lot of liberals do. He would probably say the same thing about any religious book. So being surprised he said something like that about the koran would be like being surprised a fat person ate donuts.
That said at least he is equal opportunity religious basher. Some conservative talk show hosts say the same thing about the Koran but give Christianity and Judaism a free pass and a lot liberal talk show hosts say the same thing about the bible and give Muslims a pass.
Starting the debate by openly engaging in the fallacy of demanding negative proof is not a very good idea. Just sayin'.
Depends entirely on the atheist and the level of faith and effort you put into it.
For those in the thread arguing Christianity vs. Islam as far as violence or bigotry or such, if read literally both are absolutely terrifying and disgusting from a moral standpoint. Everything from genocide to the enslavement and rape of an entire population, to killing 42 children with bears because they made fun of your bald spot. That Elisha, he sure was sensitive.
If you can point to a New Testament in Islam, perhaps this point has merit. Now, not so much. Elisha was a Christian like Maher is a Muslim.
There is no moral equivalence. One religion compels death to infidels, one compels love thy neighbor.
I see, so you are repudiating the Old Testament, rejecting it from the Christian faith. Got it. I can see the headline: "Christians say: Old Testament, Old Tosh!"
Given that most Christians adhere to the counter-reformation church, your point is invalid, not to say fatuous.Find me the New Qur'an and we can discuss what reformation is all about.

Libs......
.....isnt it then time to call for the Firing of Bill Maher? Are you starting your boycotts of the Bill Maher show as we speak?
The outrage you must feel......to see one of your own attacking the only religon you have ever defended--Radical Islam.

It's a good deed for idiots. It lets them know that they aren't alone.
That's right, I'm taking on the uber religious atheists. I'm going to demand they prove God doesn't exist, just as I've been challenged to prove He does.
To be committed to non belief is just as much a religion as someone who may not put much "effort" into their faith yet still believes in God. I think your statement is accurate for agnostics, not atheists.
I'm pretty sure they don't believe that there is a god.
-shrugs- as it does with any other religion
