I wonder how many people wouldn't even have seen the prison system if marijuana hadn't been criminalized?

Jackson was on felony bail for a pending case of attempting to disarm a police officer at the time of the alleged murder.

A thread for those stories where some state's "bail reform" or some criminal-coddling DA/Judge with a soft spot for crumbs of society has led to disaster.

Our first contestant is a crumb out on bail for robbery. Prosecutors asked for $100K, but a ***** judge kicked it down to $20K. Now free, our story's antagonist decided to climb the criminal ladder to the level of "assault & deadly weapon possession". And to show he's an egotistical freak, he's posting stuff on Instagram while on the run.
Bail lets guilty rich people go free, and keeps innocent poor people in jail. Prove me wrong.

People that are a danger to the community should be held. People that are not should be released. If you are concerned about people not showing up for trial, no rich person should be released, they have the tools to successfully run from prosecution.

First, the purpose of bail isn't to flout the presumption of innocence, and keep everyone locked up no matter how small the crime.

Second, anecdotes are not proof. If bail reform reduces the number of offenses after arrest by 20%, that's a win -- and not something you can find out from a newspaper story about a single person.

Back in the real world, bail reform isn't increasing crime, and some studies show it's reducing reoffenses:

Another study shows it reduced recidivism:

It's still early, but the data so far is pretty clear that it's beneficial. So, do you care about actual studies and research, or nah?

Well, this guy isn't planning on returning to trial. At least not voluntarily.
Maybe the legals on here can answer... Do Judges ever give low bail because the jails are overcrowded? Just curious if that's fact or myth.

Chad Michael Busto, 43, failed to report to be fitted for a court-ordered GPS monitor, so a Southampton town judge has issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Busto was released without bail during his August 25 arraignment, pending his agreement to wear a GPS ankle monitor for 60 days.

I think better discretion should be observed by moron Leftist criminal coddlers.

Yes, sometimes they make mistakes and people they thought were safe go and do really terrible things.
There's already processes to keep people locked up if they think they're dangerous but criminals are good at fooling people which is why they become criminals.

You can't be 100% sure someone you let out on bail won't go stark raving bonkers.

The entire US criminal justice system is created around revenge.

That doesn't and has never worked for me. And it's not justice, especially where in the US you have at least 3 levels of justice.....UNLESS someone wants to argue that Trump is not getting really, really tepid treatment!

Other countries, including Canada are moving to a 'restorative model", here we are taking lead from the indigenous community, where the objective is to 'restore' the individual to a legal way of life.

In the US, it is a well oiled downward slope. Once in the system, you have about a 3% of ever leaving it behind. Christ you take away the right to VOTE! That makes a non person! You carry a fellony FOR LIFE!

I have first hand experience with restorative justice, a young landscaper who worked for me got caught in a stolen care where there were drugs and stolen credit cards. No one would admit anything so all were charged. He faced to maybe as much as five years. he had me and others backing him and he was sent through the restorative justice program which including community work.....and having to go to each of his neighbors in his community and personally apologize to them for tarnishing the image of indigenous peoples! He told me the few days he spent in jail didn't bother him....but he 'sure as ****' was never going to have to apologize like that again!

I believed him.

Court documents say Adrian attacked the other homeless man with a golf club, and threatened him with a hatchet. He was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Travis County Jail on $40,000 bond.

But just four and half months later, the judge reduced Adrian’s bond to $1, and he was released back on the street.

On Dec. 10, while out on bond, Adrian was arrested for allegedly stabbing another man over a disagreement about meth, according to an arrest affidavit.

Thread is 2 yrs old. 119 posts in it.
I guess the hoopla about terrible bail bonds was a bit over exaggerated.

How many bails have been set over these last 2 yrs? One would think this thread would have 1000s of bad bail fails.

I would have never ever guessed a billionaire like Soros would even have a clue who some puny DA is.

If someone thinks bail should be used to keep everyone locked up until trial because maybe one of them might commit a crime, they don't think much of the constitution. 🤷

Want to do that? Use a dangerousness hearing. Or, y'know, don't care about the constitution.

I might as well blame you for the parking spot you took in the supermarket because, if you hadn't taken it, that guy wouldn't have gotten mad that you took the spot he wanted and later put someone in the hospital via rage-inspired bar fight. I might as well then say that you should always take the spot farthest from the store to avoid your parking fail.

???

You’re not really explaining what you want. You’ve picked an impressive number of cherries, but you’re picking from a tree with millions of arrests every year.

Shouldn’t bail be about making sure the accused shows up in court, and not a way of financially pressuring them into taking a plea deal even if they are innocent? Shouldn’t all Americans be presumed innocent and given a speedy trial?
