Are you proud of your race?[W:33]

Are you proud of your race?

Does it really make sense to be proud of any physical trait shared by billions of other folks that have nothing else in common? Pride could logically be taken for individual differences from the normal, e.g. special musical, athletic or literary talents, but not for simply being in a racial group.

Pride is often taken (even encouraged?) for belonging to a cultural, national or regional group but that too is pride over shared differences from competing groups (ecouraging emulation?) rather than simply pride of sameness.

That seems to indicate that racial (or gender) pride would simply be bigotry, aka racism (or sexism), since one is not normally (see note below) able to change their race (or gender).

Note: please do not get into Michael Jackson changing his facial features/skin color or Bruce becoming Caitlyn Jenner.

I'm starting this poll because I've seen some here make the argument that if it's ok for black people to express pride in their race and not be deemed racist, then whites should be able to as well. Ok, on the surface, that seems reasonable, but digging into it a littler further I started thinking about taking pride in whatever race you happen to be and it seems kinda odd. Does it mean you deserve some of the credit if someone has done something good, if you're of the same race? Does it really make sense to take pride in a physical trait you had zero control over? How is being of any race an accomplishment in itself?

Anyway, working on the poll. Oh, and I thought about not making the votes public, but I figured someone who is proud of their race wouldn't be shy in answering an unapologetic "yes".
Considering that people suck, and that said suckage is racially blind and equal opportunity, I found the question rather silly when I first read the thread title. Then you placed in the context of 'black pride' and the such, and it had more substance.

As someone said already, if you're talking who you are and your heritage, that's cool. If you're talking solely racial physical characteristics, that's actually kind of sad, because it's either shallow or a desperate attempt to artificially bolster one's own self-esteem.

Since no one else brought it up;

Humility is the foundation of all virtue, but pride is the essence of all sin. The world system operates on the basis of pride for all that is in the world is lust and pride (1 John 2:16). Pride and lust are root sins from which all other sins spring. Pride is the mother of evil.

I'm happy to be a white male, it really simplifies a lot of things. But I wouldn't necessarily say I'm proud of my race. I'm proud of my own accomplishments, but that's about it. Generally, I live my life after the wise teachings of Bender Bending Rodriguez.

"Everyone's a jerk. You, me, this jerk [points in a random direction]. That's my philosophy"

Plus, the white race has caused havoc upon itself as much or even more than towards other races.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

I'm just proud of being me. I've led a good life, been a success professionally, married a wonderful man, and am raising 3 great kids.

it is not about politically correct posts

Re: Are you proud of your race?

Pride in one's race is what people resort to when they have no other reason to be proud.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

People who are "proud of their race" crack me up. Like they had something to do with the people who actually went out and did something. Most of those proud racial people have not done anything of any note. It's hilarious. I was born this way and I am proud even though I had not a damn thing to do with it. :lamo

That is a pretty useless response as it shows you don't understand the context of what she posted or why. She is talking about being proud of what she has done and not her race.

what is Stephen Curry race?

Re: Are you proud of your race?

I try not to feel pride or shame for things I had nothing to do with.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

Blackish? His father is Dell Curry, who is pretty damn black. Steph looks half-and-half.

Am I proud of the melanin content of my skin? Why the heck would I be proud of that? What is there to be proud of? Is it an accomplishment?
I might as well be proud of by left testicle. Or my ear lobes. Or the index finger on my right hand.

To be proud of something so innocuous as the melanin content in one's skin seems ridiculous to me.

As far as I am concerned, there is only one race...the human race. Why people insist on calling themselves an entirely different race in 2015 just because they have more or less melanin (or some other small genetic difference) seems silly in the extremis to me.
Sure, back in 1550 or something, when most people were staggeringly stupid/ignorant - I get it. But today? Weird. I guess people are still pretty dumb/ignorant.
And looking at the huge support Donald Trump gets, the ridiculous paranoia over Islam and the pathetic obsession so many have with the moronic financial ideas of Keynesianism/Krugmanism...it makes sense.

He is of a race of gods with powers beyond the mere mortal.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

Pride in my race? No. That's a matter of genetics. Pride in the heritage and culture of my family and my community? Yes. That was forged by actions of others and maintained and nurtured by me and my generation and will be kept alive by future generations.

Race? Insignificant other than maybe medical predisposition. Culture? Heritage? Both of these can be a matter of pride and used as a guiding force, or shunned due to generational failures and apoplectic socialization.

Well said.

My parents, my grandparents, great grandparents and their parents were all Irish, so I am proud I am a purebred, so to speak. We have been in the USA for 175 years so it is a somewhat strange accomplishment. Boozers and brawlers, don't ya' know? I have an environmental dislike for the British, but it is not extreme. I suppose it is the same type pride a Zulu that has been in the USA for 175 years and is still of a glossy black Zulu heritage. Seems the same to me.

As a member of the Human Race, I am not proud of how my race has acted and continues to do so much needless harm.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

No, I have no pride or shame in my race. I find it foolish to be proud of one's genetic inheritance and somehow take credit or punishment for good/evil committed by people who shared similar genes.

Re: Are you proud of your race?

Why would I be proud of my race? Why would anyone?

You don't get to pick your race and if you choose to be defined by your race you are a fool. Choose, instead, to be defined by your character because that is something you control and should strive to be proud of.
