Gunmen attacked an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital on Saturday, leading to a fierce gunbattle with police and leaving at least 20 people dead, the Kenyan Red Cross said.

Fifty more people were wounded in the attack at the mall in Nairobi, said Abbas Gullet, head of the Kenyan Red Cross.

The gunmen burst into the mall and shot indiscriminately, taking some people hostage, according to a senior Kenyan government source.

It was unclear how many hostages the attackers took, but police are trying to negotiate for their release and retake the building, according to the source.

I'm not sure how one "likes" a post that is nothing but a factual report of a gun fight that led to 20 people being killed?

no evidence of that yet! This could just be the work of an armed gang.

"We are treating this as a terrorist attack," said police chief Benson Kibue, adding that there are likely no more than 10 attackers involved. Police did not say what group was responsible for the attack.

Somali's Islamic extremist rebels, al-Shabab, vowed in late 2011 to carry out a large-scale attack in Nairobi in retaliation for Kenya sending troops into Somalia to fight the insurgents

The gunmen announced that non-Muslims would be targeted, said Elijah Kamau, who was at the mall at the time of the midday attack.

thanks for the update.

thanks for the update.

No trouble.

"The gunmen told Muslims to stand up and leave. They were safe, and non-Muslims would be targeted," he said.

From the same AP article.

Aha, they were accused in the AP but not confirmed. Do you have the link for that?

Not so much a gunfight as a massacre of unarmed civilians.

It seems the winner of this War on Terror has yet to be decided.

It seems that US foreign policy is strengthening the terrorists!

Kenyatta has stated that family members were lost in the attack today which could explain the timing. There have been some unspeakable acts today too.

Some witnesses said the gunmen had told Muslims to leave and said non-Muslims would be targeted."They came and said: 'If you are Muslim, stand up. We've come to rescue you," said Elijah Lamau.
He said the Muslims left with their hands up, and then the gunmen shot two people.

an Indian man standing next to him who was asked for the name of the Prophet Muhammad's mother was shot dead when he was unable to answer.

Ingredients for a cross-religion war.
On the other side of the continent, Boko Haram have tried to start one in Nigeria (where the 1960's civil war remains a strong reason for people not to start another) but this attack in Kenya may be signs of a push for one on Africa's East Coast.

Haven't you heard, back in May President Obama said the global war on terror was over.

Wait, wait...I got it...obviously this Kenyan did this because I have a right to own guns. .

Perhaps for his part, but the terrorists may feel quite differently. It usually takes at least two parties to declare that a war is over

Well now. Obama claimed during the election that he had al-Qaeda, "on the run" and "decimated."

His useful idiots here in the states believed him but something tells me the people in Kenya are not buying into that foolish line of BS. At all.

Kenya? Hmmm. That rings a bell.

Doesn't the current President's family still live there? He should be really upset about this!
