We have thought about Belize, low cost of living and great weather.

Never really looked into Ecuador, might give it a look
There are lots of US expats in Ecuador. It's always on those lists of best foreign places to retire. It's cheap, rustic and the weather is nice.

It does look enticing. I read that crime is high, but that would need some more details as that can be rather subjective.

Mexico is a good example of where the headlines can be deceiving. Sure crime is high where the drug wars are raging but that rarely impacts tourists and expats. The cities not involved in those wars that are good for expats (such as San Miguel de Allende) are safe.

Belize city is a nightmare for crime but the islands or the interior are fine

The wife and I are giving serious consideration to retiring outside of the US.

Right now Malta is in the lead. We have a trip planned there is 2023 for our 30th anniversary to see if it is a good fit for us.

There are a few other places but I have to admit I really suck at learning languages so I really want to stick to places that speak English.

How did you come up with Malta? Me and the missus stopped there for a day or so during a Med cruise. I enjoyed it, not sure i could get used to living on a small island. The seafood and climate were good, it was the closest to Africa that we have come, if you discount the passages through the Pillars of Hercules.....

South East Asia is nice. Burma, Laos (give Vientiane a pass and go to Luang Prabang) and Cambodia. I've not been to Vietnam but understand it's worth a visit.

I know someone in England who's been all over Europe and he said Czech Republic was his favorite.
Prague is a really beautiful city. Beer is good and cheap as well.

My backup choice after France would be Portugal. I think it's the most inexpensive country in Western Europe. The food is great, beaches are nice and the scenery is amazing.
Love Portugal. Lisbon is the hidden gem of Western Europe. People are so friendly but the language is not the easiest for me.

I'd stay in Canada, but move to Victoria or somewhere out there. Same beautiful area I grew up, but with the benefit of being in Canada.

Man Canadians love their country

I'd stay in the US. It's not that I don't think there are other nice places to live, but I'd find it hard to move far away from my family. I would travel a lot though.

Most that I know do, but I'm American. So still choosing Canada, just a different part than I live in now, that's more like the place in Washington I am from.

Consider this question post-Covid:

You win a lottery or just decide to Hell with it, you rather live elsewhere.

Would you?

If given the opportunity would you rather stay in the country you were born in or move to another country?

Since most of the population on DP is American, would you prefer Canada? Europe? New Zealand? Do like many expats and move to South America?

Or is home the best place to live?

Personal aside: being Canadian I would stay put, but might consider New Zealand or Denmark.

Is the assumption that I'm able to successfully and painlessly navigate that country's immigration hurdles?

I think it's great. I am an American but would move in a heartbeat except for my kid

No. America is just fine.

Canada is America Light, but it's cold. Might have a summer house there.

We are currently keeping our options open. Looking at Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Health care is good and prices are very reasonable. Cost of living in general is much less.

Not necessarily "live" elsewhere, but the husband wants a yacht (he's been watching videos for the last year+) and to travel a lot on that. Even wants to basically work from that. We'd likely still be homeported here in the US, but not sure he plans to stay off the ocean long if we get one.

I like Canada, it's basically like America if we ever got our shit together. There are lots of places I would like to live for at least a few years. I would like spending a few years in China, especially the Guilin area. Northern Europe would be nice.

The main problem I have is that there is demand for the field I am in all over the world (DevOps Engineer), but the pay for that field is higher in the United States than just about anywhere else.

If someone hasn't lived elsewhere, I find them boring.

I know people who've literally never left their home towns. I don't know how to process that.

If New Zealand wasn't such a long way away I would likely already live there. It has a much better system of government.
The culture and the environment can't really be beaten, as well as the climate.
It's big enough to have major cities and rural countryside. Both beaches and Mountains.
The only drawback is that any time I needed to visit loved ones or have them visit me it's like $2000 and 24 hours worth of flights to get home.

I've gone to sleep on one side of the Atlantic and woke up on the other a few times. Develop a method for that and it's easy.

We’ve been to Prague, also. Around Christmas time, enjoyed ourselves, but what’s up with all the consonants?
