Do you believe that criminals will still have access to guns if a law is enacted to take guns away from law abiding citizens?
Yes or No
No 'maybe's' or 'sometimes' or 'I don't know's'
This one is as incisive as can be.
Is there a point to this thread, Marsden, besides serving as a center for right-wing anti-government tirades, and ridiculous hypothetical situations?

Diane Feinswine and a GOP judge both want complete confiscation of the stuff called "assault weapons"No, if only because we already have millions of guns floating around. Banning the sale of guns won't destroy those that were already sold.
No politician is stupid enough to suggest an outright gun ban, though, so chill out.

Depends, if it does nothing to reduce the number of guns in society then it will have no affect and Criminals will still get guns. If it's at the end of a massive and thorough confiscation policy which drastically reduces the number of guns in the country; then yes it will reduce (perhaps not eliminate in full) the number of criminals getting guns.
Yes. The point is that I'm tired of repeatedly preparing and posting posts which assume the gun control fans are stupid.
I want some assurance they are aware that bad guys will always be able to get guns and that by banning guns for everybody only the bad guys will have guns. Then, they will be better able to shoot the good guys.
If we can get past this elementary understanding then maybe real progress might be made in this ongoing debate.
sort of like your claims that the purpose of gun control is the collective good?
That.
There are already around 300 million guns in America. Many, perhaps most, are not registered or there is no current paperwork tying them to their current owner. Stats on Canada and Australia's gun registration/confiscation activities suggest low compliance... in America it would undoubtably be lower still.
In brief, even with a total ban it is very likely most of those 300 million guns would NOT be turned in.
To have any significant effect on criminals ability to get guns, you'd have to go full-on police state with house-to-house searches... either without warrants or with warrants issued without probable cause in many cases. Cops and agents would spend millions of man hours walking through fields and woods with metal detectors looking for buried gun caches. It would take truly draconian Police State measures over the course of quite a few years to even put a major dent in the number of guns floating around in America.
Short of such drastic action, no you're not going to significantly reduce the availability of guns to criminals... just make criminals of formerly honest people.
My claim that gun control can decrease gun violence is comparable to a right-wing anti-government tirade/ridiculous hypothetical situation?
If there weren't facts to back up my position, I might agree it is just as baseless. Sadly, for you, it's not.
you have no facts to back up your position. anti gun groups tried to prove that the clinton gun laws saved lives the best that could be established is that suicides among one group of men (50-55 IIRC) MAY have decreased due to the Brady waiting period. as to the AWB-zero evidence
Every criminal was once a good guy until, well, they changed. So, if you take away the guns from the good guys, there won't be any more criminals. Problem solved.

What? There are 300 million+ guns in the USA, so every criminal can have 3,000 of them yet, somehow, that does not occur. That is akin to saying that every alcoholic started life by drinking milk. While probably true, that it is correlation and not causation. Try again.
Meh, there would obviously be new laws enacted after guns are turned in, to prevent the further use of any weapons which haven't been accounted for.
This is never going to be a simple yea or nay question.
Say for example, if a new law enacted would allow for castration or the chopping off of a hand for anyone found with an illegal weapon.
There are lots of variables IMO.

To what extent do the people visiting this thread wish to control gun ownership? (of those who favor controlling gun ownership, that is)
