What would a sincere apology look like?

One that was backed by internal Japanese texts for home consumption. The Chinese have been addressing this question for years by , inter alia, looking at the content of Japanese school text books. These uniformly portray Japan as an innocent victim.

So you feel that the Japanese culture needs to thoroughly review and educate their populace on the horrors they caused as part of any form of, say, reparations?

Yay nukes!

Silly Americanisms like 'yay' and 'nukes' were not in in vogue in England in 1945. So I probably said something like 'Hooray for the atom bombs' when they were dropped. I was nine at the time and wise beyond my years,

Who cares.

It's not even close imo. Hitler's unprovoked crimes against humanity stand alone and will likely for all eternity be considered uniquely evil. Japan's wartime aggression is a close second.
“Close second” is an odd way of saying “worse”

At this late date, why should they? First, the ones who caused WWII and Japanese expansion are probably all dead. Those alive today had nothing to do with WWII or their initial invasion of China or their attack on Pearl Harbor. It would be like blaming and holding the son and grandsons responsible for his father's transgressions which the son and grandson being completely innocent.

Second, we had war crimes trials after WWII to take care of those most responsible. Besides, it over with. Ancient history. High past time to move on and confront the world as it is today and not as it was back during WWII.

Did we ever apologize for dropping two nukes? That would seem to be the worst thing of all.
Dropping the nukes was not the worst thing of all... in fact, it was not even a bad thing.
why apologize for that? their deaths are on the heads of the japanese government.
Agreed...
Better question:

Can you name a country that has apologized for starting a war ever?
I think France did for invading Russia in 1812.
Do you believe that any of these apologies were sincere? I don't
Did Sweden ever apologize for the battle of Fýrisvellir?
More of the hate America crap!
Who bombed Pearl harbor on a early
Sunday morning? Oh I know America bad.
Same old boring song from this poster!
Agreed. It is tedious.
Im not sure if Japan ever made reparations but the country is still severely ethno nationalistic but is making some strides.
This is true...

List of apologies issued by Japan. Apologies came from even the Emperor, who speaks for the entire nation.
I did not see Pearl Harbor on that list...

The premise of your question is incorrect.
Why?

It seems like the right thing to do...

I think Japan has apologized a few times.

There's a big cultural difference. We say we're sorry all the time, but in Japan saying you're sorry really means something.

That is a good point.

Most of their apologies seem to have been made in general, during their sessions of Congress (Diet), etc.

I was given that list already... I don't see anything about attacking Alaska on it.
You expect them to issue a separate apology for each individual incident throughout history? That is an impossible task.

Why not? They apologized specifically to many countries and groups... Burma (which isn't even a country anymore), Korea, women, Australia.

Considering that the Japanese slaughtered at LEAST five million Chinese civilians alone— not to mention the numerous other atrocities committed against both civilians and POWs alike— your post reveals a staggering level of ignorance.

It does raise an important question of morality though....do you judge a countries character by what they did in one situation or what they have done in the past?

She hates America and everything about America.

And then she wants us to vote for her election picks.

Considering that significant segments of the Japanese populace and government are totally unwilling to own up to the atrocities they committed in the past....notably, the forced sexual slavery of vast numbers of women throughout the war

I’d say there’s still a ways to go.

LOL, okay. Forgive me for my great, great, great grandfather for robbing that bank. Feel better?
It is a start in the right direction!! :)

It means nothing to you that I had nothing to do with it, does it?
I apologized for my relatives coming over on the Mayflower.

I understand what your are saying however, I would simply say there have been many many questionable acts by many countries throughout the world. Each situation must be judged and the events that occurred and ramifications of that considered.

The point I am trying to make is this: Does Japan's wrongful and heinous actions suddenly make the US's actions alright?

What actions are those that you now speak towards?
