If you like dessert wines I suggest you try any Spanish cream sherry that your local liquor place sells. You can't go wrong with them as they are the sweetest wines ever, so sweet you dont even need to eat a sweet.

I'll keep that in mind! I'm not sure that I've ever had a Spanish port. Sounds yummy!

Yummy is not how I'd describe port. Rich, deep-bodied, warming, yes. It's definitely not sweet.

Not port, but sherry- port is made from red grapes while sherry is made from white ones in Andalusia. If you want a sweet wine then cream sherry is the sweetest possible variety you can get. Try it! :drink

Gotcha. I get the difference. :)

Other.

I generally make a point of avoiding drinking if I'm not in a good mood. It generally doesn't cheer me up, and if it did cheer me up, that would be dancing with a risk factor.

I love good beer, good wine, and good liquor. So, taste definitely factors in.

Of course, I admit full-heartedly that I also rather quite enjoy the mental sensation of alcohol. I tend to feel more energetic and animated. It's also just plain frankly pleasant.

If I've put in a 12 hour day, I might pour a 2-3 finger glass of straight whiskey...which is more than one ought but sometimes, **** it. It's less about relaxing and more about creating a undeniable mental break between what I was just focusing on and the remaining time before sleep. (I've also found that the buzz itself is significantly more pleasant if it comes after you've done a ton of work in a day, holding the amount consumed constant)

From time to time, say, a celebration, I drink until I am rather seriously buzzed and/or "drunk." But I do not resolve to "get drunk" in advance. I also don't accidentally drink more than I intended to. I certainly avoid getting "sloppy" drunk, which would simply be embarrassing at this point in life.

But, as with most people, I don't drink at anywhere near the rate I did in the glory days, aka, the end of HS and through college....

I don't have children yet...but once I do, I might have a glass of wine with dinner but that'll have to be pretty much it for the most part.

Best port I've ever had in my life:

International Wine Shop Delaforce Porto Tawny 20 Year Curious and Ancient

A tad pricey, but so very good. This one's from Portugal.

(Their shipping rates only make sense if you're buying a case, whether it's mixed or all the same. I can't find this stuff in MA, apart from a few restaurants. A friend did find some in San Fransisco, but I don't know which store and she wouldn't remember if I asked. Was years ago).

I voted....
To get drunk, To relax, To be social, It dulls the pain, I'm an alcoholic and Other.

Most health websites will say I am an alcoholic, because I get drunk more than 2 times per year, so, I hit that one because, well, I may as well own, right? Sometimes, it DOES dull the pain. I have a bad day, sometimes it's a really quick and easy relaxer. It also makes doing the dishes and laundry go by MUCH faster, after a long day. And to be social, sure sure. And of course, yeah, sometimes I drink to get drunk. That pretty much falls under the to be social category, as being drunk by yourself is no fun at ALL. Like, what would be the point, at that point?

I would also like to add that, for whatever reason, drinking beer and playing video games is pretty awesome, too.

For me, I think what it mostly comes down to is, surrendering responsibility. It's like a little four hour vacation. You can't be responsible when you're drinking. They won't even let you drive, know what I mean? So, you make plans for it. Let the wife know. Have someone watch the kids, so you can go out with the buds. And then, when you do something stupid with your overly macho group of friends........you blame the beer.

If you've been doing some hard physical work outside on a hot summer day, nothing in the world tastes as good as that first cold beer! ManOMan. The following ones are pretty good also.

Yeah, they are....but that FIRST one, right out of the freezer, so cold that a little bit of frost is built up in the neck of the bottle.

Yup. I like my craft beers, but I'll tell you, nothing beats a good pale cold one on a hot day, a PBR, Michelobe, or, if your upscale, a Stella.

I had some really good bourbon on new years, this stuff called Bullit. Good stuff.

Anyways, that experience gave me the urge to try some craft bourbon/whiskey. And ended up buying a bottle of Elijah Craig. It's aged 12 years, and it was pretty cheap. Ended up being $30. I've had a bit, and it is pretty damned good.

I have a glass of Cabernet every night and sometimes a martini. I rarely have more than one. I'm sure I drink too much but don't really care about that a whole lot. I figure the stress reduction is a pretty fair trade-off. On the rare occasions when i have too much I'm pretty cheerful so, I'm okay with that too.

I am picky about what I drink. I only drink good Scotch and good craft beer. So I drink because it tastes good to me. I have maybe 3-4 drinks spread out over the week so I'm not getting much of an effect from the alcohol. It relaxes me but only in the same way reading, watching tv, or listening to music relaxes me. Maybe once or twice a year with friends I will drink enough to feel the effects of alcohol.

We are real close in our habits. I love a good Bourbon or Scotch and love good beer. I drink about the same amount through the week but occasionally will endulge a little more if I am having a great time or the conversation is very interesting. I probably have four or five times a year been to the point where I am feeling it and will slow down or start drinking water. In my youth I would just pound liquor until I passed out or at least felt horrible the next day. I stopped doing that as I hate the feeling.

I'm Irish, Welch and Native American along with some German...definitely an alcoholic.

I have two beers per day.

To be fair, there is hardly a culture out there without deep roots in some form of intoxicant.

German - Beer
Russian/Polish - Vodka
Irish - Whiskey
Scotch - Scotch
English - Pubs
French/Italian - Wine
Japan - Sake
Mexico - Tequila & Mezcal
America - All these ****ing things together

Sometimes I drink to chill, other times to help me sleep, many times because I'm with friends and we have fun. And then sometimes because life just ****ing sucks and vodka is nice

Intoxication has been a goal of the human species since the beginning of time.

There's actually a theory floating around that civilization came about because people wanted to brew beer and/or wine so they could get drunk, which then led to farming...

I think I've heard that before.

I have always wondered how things like this come about. Did someone accidentally ingest something that intoxicated them, they liked it, then they had their purpose in life to recreate it?

Or, cooked meat. Did a deer get roasted in a forest fire, smelled good, and someone liked the smell and said, "Let's eat that!"?

Or more likely it was fermenting and they were starving and did it unwillingly out of necessity and tripped across it.

Maybe the Muslims should drink. :)

Bulleit should only be a few bucks more per bottle, if you liked it

Why do you drink?

You can pick multiple options, as they fit.

I drink because I enjoy it. Wine, beer, whiskey, vodka I usually cut myself off at three drinks though.
