What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

Arcadian (2024) Nic Cage and his two young sons battling monsters in a post apocalyptic cheapie. It started out kinda interesting, but quickly devolved after 15 minutes in. The creatures are pretty inconsistent, being totally lethal in some scenes to being total pushovers that can easily be killed/captured by teens in the next. Meh. Skipped through much of the final half to finish the movie. Rating 4/10

September 5 (2024) Historical thriller that dramatizes the ABC sports crew during the 1972 Munich Olympics and the terrorist attack that followed. Based on a true story, it as really interesting to see that even the smallest of decisions they made had a huge impact on live news reports that became standard for the industry. Its a tight little movie that takes place in a single setting and kept my interest throughout. Well made, and with good performances. The technical aspects are especially a standout, effortlessly blending in the movie with the actual historical footage. Rating 8.5/10

The Brutalist (2024) Clocking in at 3 and a half hours, this was indeed a brutal watch. Adrien Brody stars as a European WW2 refugee in America, and his trials and tribulations as a master architect of the brutalist school. There was some brilliant individual scenes and the photography is stunning, but this could have easily been edited down to under two hours for a faster paced drama and would have lost nothing. As it was, the movie was overhyped. Rating: 5.5/10

I just saw the Brutalist and never got bored. I thought it was very good.

Black Bag....I rate it a 10.. A modern day spy thriller, great casting.

I love Cate Blanchett and I saw her and Fassbender on Colbert promoting it. I cant wait until it's streaming.

A real heart pleaser, based on a true story.

This is now being released in theaters with a different cast. It looks really good.

Twisters was a bit better than the original. Only complaint is Helen Hunt didnt come back. I really like her as an actress. It would have tied in where the team got Dorothy from too. I like that it showed that many of the tornado safety myths are very dangerous like overpasses. The pool shelter was a nice touch and i thought the youtubers were going to be this movie’s Jonas team but they turned it around which was a positive ending. When you take Twisters on its own terms its pretty good.

Overpasses are not safe shelters and most overpasses dont have girders. Overpasses provide a very narrow channel for air to flow through which actually increases the wind speed so you get more powerful winds under an overpass.

The overpass myth came from a tornado video featuring a tornado that went along the roadway to the left of the overpass and the overpass had girders which is why the people under it survived.

Ugh, I streamed it recently. Thought it was "not terrible but not good." Basically just dumb. Good visuals tho, as to be expected. Maybe nice, light entertainment 🤷 4/10

I do agree with you that a deliberate tie-in with the first movie would have been really nice.

I saw Elevation. It was good. It was kinda predictable though and was another of these unstoppable monsters that humans can't kill until all of a sudden we figure out how to kill them and humanity is saved... but it was still pretty cool.

The other day I watched 2001 a space odyssey for the first time ever.

I got the impression that if I had watched it when it first came out, I would have been wowed by the visualization of space, the atmosphere, etc.

I enjoyed the middle part of the movie, especially the eerie scenes with HAL and the escalating tension.

I was bored by the never-ending, psychedelic sequence.

The ending, I think I got the idea, but overall it didn’t make much sense to me.

The point was that it wasn't supposed to make sense.....

It was never a narrative tale. Those who could not look beyond the basic plot of a TV Western or sitcom were left in the dark.

Philosophers still debate the point or points. Who were the "apes" in the opening sequence? Was it even earth?

remember it came out the year the USA put men on the moon for the first time.

From the trailer, I don't get the impression it's the same. I'm planning to see Penguin Lessons next week, so then I can compare...

Ok, then let me know. I plan on waiting for Penguin Lessons to stream anyway.

Wicked is streaming for free on Peacock...I keep meaning to watch it but never do. It's just not that appealing but it's "all over the place" right now.

I haven't seen it yet either.....

Strange Darling 9/10, surprised at how good it was:

Things Will Be Different 8/10, slow at times and kinda predictable:

SlingShot 1/10, had the 'actors' and 'budget' but the film was just awful:

In A Violent Nature 1/10, really? This is suppose to be a horror flick like Friday The 13th, but ended up being 80 mins of just the murderer walking around with limited dialogue:

Stop-Loss (2008)

This 2008 war drama tells the story of Brandon King, an American soldier who returns home from Iraq and is supposed to be discharged from the military but is instead ordered to redeploy to Iraq for another tour through the Army’s “stop-loss” program. Though flawed, Stop-Loss is a decent film and does a good job of showing the terrible costs that war can exact upon servicemembers and their families. The cast is okay. Ryan Phillippe, who plays the soldier who attempts to avoid being stop-lossed, isn’t one of my favorite actors, but he’s enjoyable to watch. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was terrific in Snowden, is good as Tommy, King’s soldier-friend who wants to stay in the Army but gets kicked out for alcoholism. Channing Tatum, a largely forgettable actor, is barely passable as Brandon’s best friend and comrade-in-arms. There’s one (unintentionally) funny scene where Brandon learns about his redeployment order and justifies his opposition to being stop-lossed by saying the policy only applies in times of war and President George W. Bush said the war in Iraq was over (“Mission Accomplished”). Apparently, it didn’t dawn on Staff Sgt. King that Bush might be a bit of a liar.

Doing some nostalgia watching today. One of my favorite war movies of my youth:

1743366405513.webp

A war movie with Robert Duval, Michael Caine and Donald Southerland can't be bad.

And it's not. It is quite good.

The plot is about a ill conceived Nazi plan to kidnap Winston Churchill.

Great acting, great characters, great visuals, great action, great sound and some real thought put into the the combat.

9/10

A Real Pain - Kieran Culkin performance is the standout in this film. Simple character study movie exploring two cousins with quite different personalities reconnecting on a trip to Poland in tribute of their grandmother. Worth a watch. Free on Hulu

Seen all and agree with each of your assessments!!!

Although I thought much of A Violent Nature was rather original. It could have stood as part of a larger epic about haunted mountain ranges or something. I loved the ending of Strange Darling....so low key after all the action.

Found it boring and it went on forever. Not only that, partway thru I wanted to look up an actor and found that it's ONLY PART ONE.

Ack! I love Broadway and musicals and many of the films based on them, like West Side Story and the Sound of Music, and I found this mostly trite and the songs too literal and unimaginative. Even that final note that Elphaba sings that's on every commercial...you hear that in practically any stage musical and as well performed.

This could be true without top notch audio and visual.

But the costumes, the sets, the amazing voices cannot be denied.

I'll grant you the story was 5/10 but other than that it was 10/10

I felt that way about Barbie too. Visually well done and interesting. But not nearly enough to hold my interest or even generate any. And my audio is excellent. I do like dancing and found that much better in Barbie than in Wicked...maybe they just went on too long 🤷

Barbie had no redeeming qualities except for the lead actress. Currently the hottest women in the world.
