On March 27, 2015, five other children of gays (COGs) and I went to Washington, D.C. to deliver our amicus briefs to the Supreme Court of the United States. The biographies of Heather Barwick, Katy Faust, BN Klein, Robert Oscar Lopez, Denise Shick, and Dawn Stefanowicz have already been narrated, perhaps excessively, in conservative publications, so I will not waste the reader’s time by recounting the specifics of each confessional. What should have mattered – and what, as it turns out, didn’t matter – is our categorical identity. We are the real-life faces of people with serious standing in the question of gay marriage.

Especially in light of Justice Kennedy’s sweeping inclusion of custody and birth certificates in his definition of gay adults’ Fourteenth Amendment “equal protection” rights, gay marriage has a much greater impact on children than it ever could have had on gay couples. Whereas gay adults may get married, then get divorced, and even remarry to the opposite sex if they wish, children placed in mother-mother or father-father homes are irreparably estranged from half or all their heritage, and permanently denied a mother or denied a father.

The anecdotal stories of five children, notwithstanding (and, on a side note, can we also talk about all the ****ed up situations that children raised in heterosexual homes face?), here is an actual study which notes:

"A new study from the University of Colorado Denver finds that scientists agree that children of same-sex parents experience "no difference" on a range of social and behavioral outcomes compared to children of heterosexual or single parents."

There were children of gay couples who supported gay marriage too though. By this definition, the opposite ruling would mean they "don't matter" instead.

Obviously this is dishonest emotive rhetoric (ever proof of a lack of real argument). As with any complex debate, there are people directly involved on all sides or the argument and those who, rightly or not, feel they or others will be adversely impacted if the decision goes against them. All of those people should be included and all of their experiences, views and opinions considered but ultimately there is a decision and ultimately someone is going to be disappointed.

Not this again...

Another pathetic OP devoid of anything but sheer ignorance.

All of the five are products of divorce (either of their original straight parents, or of their gay parents), and are now evangelical Christians.

I've seen studies that indicate children of Gays are more happy and well adjusted then those of Heteros.

Like climate change sttudies, it's a matter of who you talk to.

So you want to hold that against them?

I don't follow:

Children placed in mother-mother or father-father homes are irreparably estranged from half or all their heritage, and permanently denied a mother or denied a father.
That's a family issue, not a legal issue. All children coming form separated families are in risk of being alienated - that's the downside to divorce and couples who can't come to amicable terms in the process, not gay marriage.

They were a big part of our lives, regardless of whatever imperfections we may have described in our memories of growing up. They mattered to us. By extension, gays and lesbians mattered to us. We changed our mind and started opposing gay marriage when we realized we didn’t matter to gays and lesbians.

So it's a personal tiff they're wanting to settle. I just find their breakdown of 'our parents no longer care about us - so we won't support the right for ALL gays to marry' - to be totally CHILDISH. If your parents don't care about you that doesn't mean others don't care about THEIR kids and should be denied the right to unite as a solid family when they want to.

Sorry life handed you lemons - join with the millions of other kids whose parent's don't get along after a divorce.

So...like climate change studies, when you ask the experts in the relevant field that conduct scientifically sound studies, you are much more likely to obtain an accurate picture of the truth?

I will try to find it, but we have had gay marriage and adoption as well as proxy births since the 90's. A study I read was very balanced and found some issues like "gay parents tend to be a bit over-protective, they tend to stress arts, performing arts over math and science, and they tend to reject baby sitters, etc.

The rest was I don't recall, and that was what was so striking....there was nothing of consequence either way.

You are much more likely to get the results you want given the political lean or the amount of money invested in said researchers.

Their experiences are limited to a very specific demographic: Adult children, who feel betrayed by the divorce of their parents, and therefore have tied their religious beliefs and disappointment to their parent(s) sexual orientation.

Yep, they realize their parents were huge sinners who drug them through the muck of a homosexual relationship.. What they have done is repented.

Oddly, my gay parent did not drag me through any muck. I wonder what that means...

I see the point went over your head...

Means you're lucky. Noticed you said Gay 'parent' also. wonder what that means?

Or the handful of people in your story where unlucky.
