I'm an enrolled member of the Kainah (Mountain Chiefs) Band of the Blackfoot Confederacy. We're called the "Blood".

My Father's side is Bitteroot Salish, Nimipoo (Nez Perce), Anishinabeg (White Earth Chippewa) and Scottish highlander.

My Mother's side is Kainah (Blood), Umskapi Pikuni (Blackfeet), Anishenabeg (Turtle Mountain Chip), Sisseton-Wahpeton Nakota, German and English.

I am a descendant of Mountain Chief, Sitting Bull and Joseph. I am also the descendant of the first fur trader in Idaho and Montana, Angus McDonald, the Nimipoo (Nez Perce) called him "Oopchin" which means whiskers. My English ancestor was in the calvary and was originally from Sandwich Illinios and posted to South Dakota. He married my Nakota grandmother who was a descendent of Sitting Bull. My German ancestor "took to the blanket", basically renouncing his own heritage and becoming one of the Kainah, marrying one of my grandmothers, a daughter of the great leader, Mountain Chief.

Okay, I better stop there. I have tons of stories and could go on forever!...

The whole blood degree thing is BS IMHO.... I'm Kainah, period. I just know who my ancestors are. We don't recognize the colonial government's ways of imposing membership rules on us. We don't have to. One of the basic inherant rights of a nation, to determine membership. I really wish my relatives in the US would choose to excercise those rights and quit dividing their people in portions.

P.S. If anyone would like help finding legitimate sources of information about their Indigenous ancestry, I'm pretty connected and would be willing to help.

Hey, don't blame us! Our name for ourselves is Kainah, Mountain Chiefs. I have no clue how the provincial gov't got "Blood" out of Mountain Chief!

My grandmother's name means "Woman who can see things a long way, even in the dark". Or, a See'er. The Indian agent wrote down her name as "headlight"....... pfffft!
