What is a DOS attack?

These forums underwent a DOS attack earlier.What is it? What this a disbruntled ex-participant here who tried to take the site down?
 
I don't know but we at 4chan HQ use it.
 
Denial of Service - meaning someone or someones ping or request from the server thousands of times a second resulting in taking all of the resources of the server. That is why the server seemed to not respond. The firewall was taking all the resources trying.

Then the database said - oops! - I can't do that and losts its way. So we had to tell it that everything was ok. By then, the folks or whatever that was toying with us gave up.

I'd like to point out that I'm not an ex-participant and less disgruntled at the moment than usual before accusations start flying toward the person who's proudly engaged in DoS attacks in the past and has been accused by a fellow poster here of sabotaging his website with them. Just a heads-up. ;)

So this was a purposeful attack with malevolent intent that sent a large quantity of computer signals to this site in order to overwhelm and disable it?

If I'm not mistaken, the sabotagers do this in order to sends gobs of spam.
