What do you look for in a candidate? I'd say consistency is the biggest thing I look for in an election. How many times have they changed their views? Do their viewpoints on one issue correlate with their viewpoints on another issue? How about you?

The usual things.

I look for their respect of the constitution. I want them to be fiscally responsible and socially accepting. I want them to realize the government isn't there to micromanage us or fix all of our problems.

I used to have quite a list of aspects I look for in a leader, but as the years ( and elections) go by, I find myself constantly shortening that list, lowering my standards, and unrefinibg the terms by which I define a palatable candidate.

These days? Honesty and integrity are a hopeless dream, so I'll settle for the candidate that displays the lowest levels of scubaggery. So yeah. Want my vote? Be less of a scum bag than your rivals. It's OK. With the way our politics are, it still leaves me with little to no choice. I imagine that someday I'll let go of that hope as well.

I am for the man or woman that decides to hold people accountable for their own actions. We can't simply throw borrowed money at problems until root causes and behaviors are identified, addressed, and corrected.

How they appear on TV and the quality of their sound bites

I am shallow and have a short attention span. If they can not tell me what they are going to do in 20 seconds I tune them out and go back to eating chips and drinking beer

I look for some acknowledgment that most political issues are very complex, and for a sense that the candidate will come to his own reasoned conclusion, after seriously considering the merits of both sides, without just latching onto what he thinks the key constituent groups in his party want. The person must have a general ideology that is centrist so that I am not worried the decision he comes to will be completely wacko.

Foreign Policy, although honestly foreign policy changes so little from President to President it hardly matters what they say on the campaign trail.

I ask: "Does he want the job?" If he wants the job, he's automatically disqualified.
